Curtis looked over at Belinda. “Belinda, help your mom up. I’ll call Kenneth.”

Cynthia’s raised arm hung awkwardly in the air before dropping back down. She looked down, her face dark, and went back to feeling sick.

Adriana let out a sigh and set her utensils down. “I’m done eating. I’ll go to the hospital with you.”

Curtis nodded. “Okay. I’ll cook for you when we get home.”

Kenneth showed up right after Curtis’s call, quickly moving to support Cynthia. “Mr. Lincoln, I’ll take Cynthia to the hospital. You’ve been worn out these past few days. You should head home with Mrs. Lincoln and get some rest.”

Cynthia gazed weakly at Curtis. “Curtis, you know … I don’t dare stay in the hospital by myself.”

Curtis was about to agree, but Cynthia’s words made him swallow what he was going to say.

“I’m scared… Those people won’t leave me alone. If they find out I’m still alive … ” Cynthia was visibly shaken, her fear clear on her face.

Adriana looked at Cynthia with curiosity. It seemed like she and Curtis shared a lot of secrets.

Cynthia spoke in a way that only she and Curtis would understand, clearly challenging Adriana.

By doing this, she was reminding Adriana that she would always be just an outsider–someone who could never truly come between them and would never have a place in Curtis’s heart.

Curtis turned to Adriana. “Are you tired?” He wanted to know if she would like to go to the hospital with them or head home first.

Adriana shook her head, refusing to back down. She was determined to tag along.

“I’ll go

with you.” Adriana stepped forward and helped steady Cynthia.

Cynthia glared at Adriana. “Ms. Xander, you really are such an eyesore.”

As Cynthia got into the car, she warned Adriana in a low voice not to make herself too visible.

Adriana pretended she hadn’t heard a thing and just sat down next to Cynthia.

Belinda climbed into the car as well. She looked numb, showing no real concern for Cynthia. She probably knew Cynthia was faking.

Once Cynthia was at the hospital, the doctor said she’d need to stay for observation. The cause of her sudden nausea was still unknown.

Cynthia’s health had always been poor. Any checkup would likely find some minor problems, so the doctor had her admitted just to be safe.

After all, she’d been left with a lot of complications from that car accident.

Adriana could tell Curtis felt really guilty. Cynthia had been in that accident for his sake and had spent years in a coma.

Even now, her body has never fully recovered.

“Curtis, I’m scared. Will you stay with me?” Cynthia asked from her hospital bed, her voice trembling.

Curtis spoke gently. “Adriana’s pregnant. She can’t be up late. I’ll take her home first and come back soon, okay?”

Cynthia got what she wanted and shot a challenging look at Adriana.

Adriana lowered her head, staying silent.

“Curtis, you take care of Adriana first. I’ll stay with my mom. It’s been so long since we’ve seen each other. I want to talk to her.” Belinda spoke up, offering Curtis a way out.

Curtis nodded. “That works. You and your mom probably have a lot to catch up on. I’ll have Eva bring you some food later.”

Cynthia glared at Belinda, angry that she was meddling and acting foolish.

Belinda just sat quietly, pretending not to notice her glare.

Adriana glanced at Belinda. She’d been wishing her mom would come back, but now that she had, she obviously didn’t feel as happy as she’d imagined.

Curtis took Adriana’s hand as they left. Once in the car, he finally spoke. “Cynthia has severe bipolar disorder and is at risk of suicide. She needs constant supervision. I’m sorry … I owe her, and dragging you into this today wasn’t fair.”

Adriana shook her head, looking at Curtis. Is this really just about paying Cynthia back for what he owes her?

“You love her, don’t you?” Adriana asked softly.
