In his hand was the old rosary he always carried. Jeremy had brought it back for him when he turned 18, from a priest at Mount Pine Church.
That same year, Justin had fallen deathly ill. The fever wouldn’t break, no matter how many hospitals they went to or how many doctors they begged. Then the priest gave him that rosary. By morning, the fever wa
gone.
Ever since that night, Justin had never let it leave his hand. He’d found faith in that miracle, and from then on, the rosary had become a part of him.
“You really are a mutt, Danielle said with a sneer, her voice sharp and cold. “You don’t even know who your master is.
Justin sat still beside her. His face was calm, his eyes unreadable. Not a flicker of anger crossed his features. It was like her words floated through him without landing anywhere.
If this had been Curtis, Danielle would already be in tears, torn apart by his words. But Justin wasn’t like Curtis.
He just sat there, silent as marble, fingers brushing against the rosary in his hand while he brewed his tea with quiet precision.
“Still got
bat lifeless face, Danielle snapped, leaning toward him, “What’s wrong with you? You broken or
something? Is that why you clutch that rosary like your life depends on it?”
Her voice cracked like a whip, but Justin didn’t even blink. He didn’t look at her. Didn’t move. His silence burned hotter than any insult could.
The calmer he stayed, the more her fury rose like boiling water.
Her breath quickened. “Don’t you dare look down on me. You’re just the family’s pet. I’m the one in charge here. You obey me, not the other way around!”
That’s when Justin finally moved. He lifted his head slowly, his eyes locking onto hers. They were deep blue with a faint shimmer that sent a chill down her spine.
Danielle’s heart skipped a beat.
He was half–Mowelander. His father had been a foreign teacher who slept with one of his students, then ran off back to Moweland. That girl, barely in her second year of college, had given birth to Justin in secret Terrified and ashamed, she’d abandoned him at an orphanage and never looked back.
Justin’s features carried more of his mother’s side, but those eerie blue eyes–mixed with brown undertones. -made them impossible to look away from. They were gold, beautiful, and inhumanly steady.
“Maybe I am a mutt,” Justin said quietly, his voice deep and steady. “But I only belong to Ms. Nicole. His Adam’s apple shifted when he spoke, the muscles in his throat tightening. There was nothing weak about him. His presence carried a restrained power that made Danielle’s stomach twist.
She turned her head away, heart pounding.

Pathetic dog. She’d wait for the day he lost everything

When that day came, she’d make him kneel. She’d crush that calin face and watch him break. He can’t stay expressionless forever.
“Justin, you’re here.”
Jeremy’s voice came from the hallway as he walked out of his room.
“Grandpa, Danielle said sweetly, stepping toward him at once. “Nicole’s still in Haldoria all by herself. People keep pushing her around. The Blakes even threw a welcome party for their daughter, and everyone’s been ganging up on Nicole, You should go public about her status soon. If people know she’s your heir, they’ll think twice before crossing her.”
Jeremy’s eyes darkened for a second before he nodded. That’s exactly why I brought Justin back”
A small smile curled at the corner of Danielle’s lips.
“Grandpa, Justin walked forward and held Jeremy’s arm to steady him.
Justin, Jeremy said, his voice tired but sure. “Nicole’s still in Haldoria. Her education comes first. You’ll leave tomorrow. Stay by her side. Protect her. Help her however you can. Once she graduates, I’ll make it official. I’ll write my will and call a press conference.
Justin nodded once, silent and firm.
Danielle’s smile deepened.
Nicole and Adriana were in the same year at school, just in different programs. Nicole’s graduation was coming soon.
“If you’ve got nothing else to say, go help your father. I need a word with Justin,” Jeremy said. His voice was calm, but it carried the kind of weight that made arguing useless.
Danielle’s lips tightened. She didn’t like being dismissed, not in her own house. Still, she forced a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. Before she left, she turned and shot Justin a glare sharp enough to draw blood.
When she reached the doorway, something made her stop. She turned again and glanced at him, suspicion flickering in her eyes.
Jeremy had been the one to name him. “Justin Hotchner.” Justin was a Hotchner before the name change.
“Grandpa, Justin said, his voice quiet but steady. “You called me back because you still don’t trust that Nicole’s really your granddaughter, didn’t you?”
Jeremy didn’t answer right away. He walked toward the study and motioned for Justin to follow. Once the door closed, his tone dropped low, “Arthur can’t be trusted. No one in this house can. You’re the only one I
can still count on.”
Justin gave a single nod.
He understood exactly what that meant.
“This Nicole, Jeremy said, his voice rough from age. “I don’t think she’s the real one. When you get to
