“Curtis, can I post this on Instagram?” she asked, her voice rising with excitement.
Curtis sat beside her, his elbows resting on the balcony rail. “You don’t need to ask me,” he said, eyes still on the waves. “Do whatever makes you happy.”
Adriana leaned closer, her shoulder brushing his arm. “Then let’s take a picture together,” she said softly.
Curtis turned his head, and for a moment, she caught the faintest smile on his lips.
She wanted to save it all. His face, his warmth, the quiet peace between them.
She wanted proof that this moment existed, just in case everything fell apart one day.
“Alright,” he said finally. “Let’s do it.”
He never refused her. Not once.
He was kind in a way that made her chest tighten. She wanted him to have the best.
Back in Haldoria, when Nicole had insulted him, Adriana had nearly lost her mind. She had wanted to slap that smug look right off Nicole’s face just to stop her from hurting him.
But no matter how close they became, she still didn’t really know him.
Curtis never mentioned the Bartons‘ engagement. He never explained why he couldn’t end it. Why he’d rather marry her–a woman he barely knew–than walk away from that deal.
Adriana wanted to ask. The words had burned on her tongue more than once. But something about it felt forbidden, like touching a scar that hadn’t healed.
That night, she posted the photo of them standing together on the balcony. Curtis’s arm was around her shoulders, and the sunset turned the sky gold behind them.
Her followers were few. She’d blocked most of her old college friends. But one person she didn’t block was Matthew.
Maybe it was childish. Maybe it was revenge. But she wanted him to see it.
When the notification popped up-“Matthew liked your photo“-Adriana stared at it until the screen dimmed.
She didn’t know what he felt when he saw it. And she didn’t care anymore.

While Adriana and Curtis watched the ocean turn to fire in the dying light, Matthew sat in a dim bar surrounded by half–empty bottles. He was drunk, his words slurred but loud. “I’m not getting married,” he shouted, slamming his glass down. “I’m done. I’m not marrying Natasha.”
Darren leaned across the table, his face pale. “You’ve lost your mind, man.”
Maybe he really had gone insane.
“Matthew, what the hell does that mean?” Natasha snapped as she stormed into the private room. Her heels clicked hard against the floor, her face burning with anger.
Matthew looked up from his drink, his eyes glassy and unfocused. “It means the engagement’s off,” he said, his words slurred. “We’re done. No wedding.”
Natasha froze, then grabbed the nearest glass of wine. The red liquid splashed across his face in a single motion. “You’re gonna regret this,” she spat before turning on her heel and slamming the door behind her. The sound echoed through the room.
Matthew stood there, dripping with wine. Then he snatched his phone and threw it at Darren’s chest. “She went to Neocoralis. With Curtis!”
His voice was raw, full of rage and heartbreak. “She posted it online. She’s taunting me. She still cares. I can tell she still loves me.”
He pressed his fingers against his temples, trying to fight the pounding in his head. “Darren, I need your help. I have to bring her back.”
Darren stared at him in disbelief. They’d known each other since they were kids. They’d been through everything together. He got along with Curtis too, but he feared Curtis. Seeing Matthew like this–drunk, obsessed, broken–it didn’t feel real. Matthew was his bro.
And he was doing it over one woman.
“Man, you’ve lost it,” Darren said quietly. “She’s not special. She’s just another spoiled girl. There are plenty like her.”
Matthew shoved him so hard his chair scraped across the floor. “Shut up! She’s nothing like them!”
His voice cracked, and the anger bled into desperation.
He thought of her—the way she smiled when she looked at him, the soft sound of her laugh, the way she always made the world quiet when she was near.
The years they were together were Matthew’s most peaceful. Even when Langford Group was a

Adriana wasn’t just a girl. She had been peace itself. The only part of his life that didn’t feel like
war.
She had learned to cook because of him. She had made his favorite meals and watched him with eyes full of devotion. She had loved him so fiercely it scared him.
And now she was gone. The woman who once couldn’t live without him had walked away.
The door creaked open again. “Mr. Langford.”
Danielle stepped inside, her presence sharp and elegant. She waited until Curtis and Adriana left Haldoria before showing her face.
Matthew’s eyes narrowed. “What are you doing here?”
She gave him a calm smile and signaled to the waiter. A small glass of hangover cure appeared on the table in front of him. “I heard the rumors,” she said softly. “The one about the illegitimate child. I can help you. My way will make you untouchable in Haldoria. Would you like to hear it?”
