Ms. Escape Marrying to Run, Fighting to Rise
Chapter 173 Shameless Cynthia
Finished
“Curtis, you’re finally back.” Cynthia burst through the doorway, her eyes red and glassy. Her voice trembled as she spoke. “Curtis, please, I’ve never begged you for anything before. But this time, I’m begging you. She’s my only child. Tell Adriana to drop the charges. Belinda’s still a student. If this case goes through, she’ll go to prison. Her whole future will be destroyed.”
Her tone was soft but calculated. She skipped the part about Belinda turning herself in, twisting the story until it sounded believable.
Curtis’s eyes darkened. His voice dropped, deep and sharp. “When she shoved someone down the stairs, did she think about her future then? People who do something that cruel once will do worse again. Ms. Reese, you know better than anyone that if you commit a crime, you pay for
it.”
Cynthia’s tears spilled down her cheeks as she stepped closer. “She’s just a kid. We can talk to her, fix this as a family. You helped raise her. How can you turn your back on her now?” Her voice broke as she turned to Adriana. “Even if you can’t forgive her, Adriana, at least do it for Curtis’s sake.”
She was still trying to twist the knife. Still trying to make it Adriana’s fault.
She could see the way Curtis looked at Adriana. Anyone could. But she refused to accept it.
She couldn’t stand that after all those years beside him, after raising Belinda under his roof, sh was being replaced by a woman who’d only been his wife on paper.
Curtis’s voice cut through her like glass. “I’m the one who called the cops.”
Silence filled the room. Cynthia blinked. Her face went pale
Even Adriana looked stunned. “Curtis … it was Belinda who called first.”
Curtis turned his gaze toward her. “I called too. The second Belinda told me she pushed you, I reported it. What she did was criminal. People who do something like that have to take responsibility.”
He hadn’t known Belinda had turned herself in.
Maybe there was still some decency in her after all.
Cynthia shook her head, her voice shaking. “No. You wouldn’t. You watched her grow up. You can’t possibly mean that.”
Curtis’s jaw tightened, and his tone dropped lower. “That’s exactly why I did it. I raised her. I trusted her. And she tried to kill my wife. You ever hear the story about the farmer and the

viper? That’s what this is. You nurture it, and it bites you anyway. Tell me, Ms. Reese, does that sound wrong to you?”
His anger was barely held back. It burned in his
eyes.
Adriana spoke before he could continue. Her voice was sharp, every word cutting through the air. “She told Belinda to do it. If this is the farmer and the viper, then you’re the one who taught the snake to bite, Ms. Reese.”
Cynthia might be Curtis‘ savior, but she was not hers.
Cynthia snapped her head toward her, her face twisting with fury. “Adriana! How dare you say that to me!”
Cynthia’s face changed fast, her shock twisting into a fragile kind of pain. “Curtis, I can’t believe Adriana would say something like that to me,” she said, her voice shaking. “I never thought she hated me so much. I’m really hurt.”
Her act was flawless. Every word dripped with practiced innocence.
Curtis’s brows drew together. “Ms. Reese, Adriana doesn’t speak without reason.”
His tone was calm but unshakable. The trust in his voice was obvious.
Adriana’s throat tightened. She hadn’t expected him to stand by her like that. Not when Cynthia had once risked her life for him.
Cynthia’s eyes glistened. “Curtis, we’ve known each other for years. You know me better than anyone. And yet you believe her? I almost died for you, and this is what I get? Not even a drop of faith?”
Adriana’s voice cut through hers, trembling but fierce. “Even if you saved him, that debt was paid long ago. And he never asked you to save him. You did it on your own. So stop using that as an excuse to control him. You can’t keep waving it around to hurt me. You didn’t save me.”
Her chest rose and fell fast. She was furious. Cynthia had used that favor like a weapon, holding it over Curtis’s head for years.
She really did not want Curtis to dwell on this any
further.
Curtis’s voice hardened. “Ms. Reese, you should go home. You’re not well. This isn’t the time to argue. As for Belinda, I’ll decide what happens. My wife just lost our baby. She needs peace, not chaos.”
Cynthia’s tears hung at the corners of her eyes, but she didn’t push any further. She wasn’t stupid. She knew when she’d gone too far. If she pushed now, Curtis would never forgive her.
