“I want to stay with you. I don’t want anyone bullying you. If someone says something nasty, I’ll curse them out for you.” Adriana tried to sound fierce, puffing herself up.

Curtis actually laughed.

He reached over and rubbed her head. “Since when does my little bunny know how to bite people?”

Adriana huffed. “A rabbit can bite when it’s angry. Just wait till tomorrow–I’ll show them I’m not someone to mess with.”

“Good.” Curtis’s voice softened again. “With me here, you can do whatever you want. Don’t worry about offending anyone. If you don’t like something, say it. If you want to push back, then push back. As long as it’s within reason, even if you get physical–I’ll cover you.”

Adriana’s eyes lit up. “So basically… with you backing me, I get to strut around like the boss and everyone has to step aside?”

He chuckled again. “Yes. Be as fierce as you want. Make them think twice before opening their mouths.”

Adriana’s smile faltered into something softer. She wrapped her arms around him. “I love you so much…”

The instant the words left her lips, she froze.

“Hm?” Curtis tilted his head, pretending he didn’t hear.

“N–nothing,” she stammered.

Curtis’s mouth curved. But he had heard–perfectly.

She’d said she loved him–whether it slipped out or came straight from the heart, it warmed him more than he cared to admit.

Harborton.

The moment their plane touched down, Curtis’s phone practically vibrated out of his hand–several missed calls from Irene Walton.

“Curtis, what on earth happened? Adriana miscarried? If Joe hadn’t told me, I’d still be in the dark!” Irene snapped. “Where are you now?”

“We’re back in Harborton,” Curtis replied evenly. He honestly wasn’t sure why Irene cared so much about Adriana–was it affection?

“Fine. Good. I just got back to Harborton myself to handle a few things. I’m going to see Adriana this afternoon. She didn’t give him any room to respond–just hung up in a hurry.

After hearing Adriana was pushed down the stairs, Irene had practically blown a fuse. She immediately called Joe for details and learned it was Belinda who did it.

But once Irene heard Curtis had already thrown Cynthia into a psychiatric facility, she finally exhaled.

“Was that Ms. Walton?” Adriana asked softly.

Curtis nodded. “Yeah. She likes you. She sounds genuinely worried.”

Adriana nodded too. “I like her a lot.”

Curtis smiled, gentle and proud. “The more people who care about you, the more people who’ll stand up for you.”

“Curtis!” They had just stepped out of the airport when Nicole came skipping toward them, clutching a bouquet of flowers.

Her eyes sparkled–clearly, she had already heard Adriana miscarried and thought her chance had arrived.

With school on summer break, Justin had brought her back to Harborton, and she must’ve been waiting here for Curtis to appear.

Curtis’s face darkened instantly. He sidestepped smoothly, letting her rush past empty air, not even sparing her a glance.

“Mr. Lincoln. Ms. Xander.” Justin greeted them politely and gestured toward the car. “Mr. Harold sent us to pick you both up.”

“Justin! I don’t want to pick her up! Don’t let her get in my car!” Nicole barked, sounding every bit like a spoiled heiress giving orders to her servant.

Justin didn’t react at all–his face remained cool and expressionless. In his tailored new–colonial suit, he looked almost unreal, like he didn’t entirely belong to this world.

Every time Adriana saw him, she couldn’t help being struck by his presence–and standing next to Curtis, the two of them drew so much attention that several travelers around them secretly snapped photos.

“Ms. Barton, enough. Mr. Harold is waiting,” Justin said calmly as she gestured for Adriana and Curtis to get

“Then, she can sit in the front. I don’t want to look at her.” Nicole shot Adriana a nasty glare, dripping with jealousy and entitlement.

“Then you can choose to disappear.” Curtis’s voice dropped into a cold threat, the kind that promised he meant every word.

Nicole flinched and instinctively hid behind Justin.

“Mr. Lincoln, the car’s here. Sorry–I hit some traffic,” Kenneth called out from a second vehicle. He’d flown in ahead of them and drove over to assist.

Curtis ignored Nicole entirely, took Adriana’s hand, and led her straight into the car.
