Chapter 193 The Guilt Card
Besides, Curtis and Michael weren’t just father and son, they were enemies. Worse than enemies. Their hatred ran bone–deep.
Harold let out a long sigh. He knew talking to Curtis was pointless. There was no way Curtis would willingly hand over any shares or inheritance to a younger half–brother he felt nothing for.
But as the elder of the family, it was his responsibility to make sure all his descendants had a path forward. “The only solution left is for Denton to marry Nicole … ” Harold muttered.
If Denton wanted to establish himself in the Lincolns, the only way was through the Bartons.
“But… “Anthony grew anxious. “But if he marries her, then under the agreement, the Lincoln Group shares would go to Mr. Denton. That’s not exactly fair to Mr. Curtis, is it? I mean… if Mr. Denton ends up holding the shares, there’s no guarantee he’d give any to Mr. Curtis…

They were brothers in name only. There was no bond. No love. Why would either of them be generous with the other?
Harold frowned. “Curtis grew up with me. He had the best education and resources the Lincolns could offer. Even when the family was falling apart, he managed to lead the Lincoln Group out of the ashes. Even if he loses the Lincolns, he’ll never go hungry. He’s still exceptional. But Michael… His leg’s gone. He’s weak. Useless. If Denton can’t take over and balance Curtis’s power, I’m afraid it’s only a matter of time before Curtis finishes him off.”
What Harold feared most was that Curtis might actually kill Michael.
That was why he needed Denton in power to act as a counterweight. To stop Curtis from making a move on
Michael.
Back in Haldoria …
Curtis had to be on guard, so he stayed in Harborton longer than planned to manage things in person.
Adriana stayed with him in Harborton, and Curtis even let her meet the few people he truly trusted.
Michael, on the other hand, left early with Juliet and working on Denton, planning to persuade him.
eturned to Haldoria ahead of schedule to start secretly
Denton was still working his shift at the café. By the time he clocked out, it was already dark outside.
“Denton, honey… we went to see your grandpa today. He’s getti began, trying to play the family card.
old, and he really wants to see you,” Juliet
Denton gave her a look, clearly annoyed. “Grandpa’s not exactly short on grandsons. Didn’t he raise Curtis? What does he want to see me for?”
“Don’t talk like that. He’s still your grandfather. His health’s not great. What’s so wrong with him wanting to see you?” Juliet snapped.
Denton stared at her. “Mom, fine, I’ll go see him. But let me be clear: I’m not fighting for the Lincolns fortune. If that’s what this is about, count me out.”

Juliet opened her mouth to speak again, but Michael cut in. “Alright, alright. We get it. You’re all about your principles. We’re not forcing you. This isn’t about money; it’s about family. Just go see your grandpa and acknowledge your roots.”
Denton narrowed his eyes at him. “You’re seriously not pushing me to go claim the Lincoln inheritance? Because I don’t need some big ‘return to the family‘ thing. I know who I am. I know my own name.”
Michael let out a frustrated sigh, clearly holding back, then shot Juliet a warning look.
Juliet quickly jumped in. “No one’s forcing you. Even if we wanted to, we couldn’t. Everything already belongs to Curtis anyway. You think pushing you into it would change anything?”

Denton nodded. “Glad you understand, Mom.”
Juliet didn’t say anything and started walking, motioning for Denton to follow her.
She’d just have to play along for now.
“Mom, where are we going? My rental’s that way,” Denton asked, noticing they were headed in the opposite direction.
Juliet hesitated for a second. He really wanted to go back to that run–down rental instead of staying in a luxury hotel? That place reeked of mold, and the three of them were crammed into a tiny, stuffy room.
Seeing Juliet hesitate, Michael bumped her lightly and muttered under his breath, “Stop being dramatic. You don’t catch a big fish without good bait. You’ve stayed in a nice hotel for a few days and now you can’t handle the rental?”
Juliet grumbled quietly, “Once you’ve had a taste of comfort, who wants to go back to a dump? And come on
… you’re the son of the richest man in Harborton, and I still have to suffer with you?”
“Typical,” Michael sneered, annoyed. He limped forward, calling back over his shoulder, “Come on, Denton. Let’s go home.”
Denton felt a flicker of warmth. As hard as life was, he liked it better when they were all together like this. Poor, maybe, but they earned their living honestly, with their own hands. No shady deals. No guilt.
At the Lincoln Estate, Harold knew Curtis and Adriana hadn’t left, they were still in Harborton.
He was probably trying to smooth things over on the family front, so he had someone call them both over.
