The teachers keep the smartwatches during school hours-otherwise, the kids just play with them instead of listening.
The two talked the whole ride there.
Amelia invited Nelson to come over to play at their house. “Nina’s back from her trip now-if you want to see her, you can come over.”
Nelson agreed, “Okay.”
After their talk, Amelia carried Nina out of the car and handed her off to Sally.
Sally noticed the red mark on Nina’s forehead right away.
“Nina, what happened to your head?” she asked.
Nina touched her forehead-it had been a whole morning already, and she’d forgotten what had happened.
She thought for a minute, then sniffled and said, “Mommy hit.”
Amelia was confused. “What?”
Sally cleared her throat, thinking it didn’t look like something Amelia would do.
Amelia quickly explained, “She bumped her head on the wall this morning. I didn’t hit her today-the spanking was yesterday.”
Hearing that Nina had gotten a spanking yesterday, Sally couldn’t help but smile a little.
Looks like this little troublemaker still needs her mom to keep her in check.
“It’s okay,” Sally reassured Amelia. “Kids are like that-they don’t fully understand things yet, so they often say things that aren’t right.”
After comforting Amelia, she took Nina inside.
Nina had promised to be good at daycare before they left, but once Sally carried her into the classroom, her little face still looked unhappy.
Not many children had come to daycare today.
Yesterday’s incident scared quite a few kids.
Some parents were still comforting their kids at home.
But Jerry was there.
He came specifically to find Nina-he was her little loyal sidekick now.
“Nina, you cry dream?” Jerry asked, sitting next to her a saying he’d had a bad dream.
Nina, munching on the sandwich cookies he’d brought, hook her head. “I no cry. I big girl.”

In Nina’s mind, big girls didn’t cry and were tough.
The two sat together talking. Nina finished all the snacks Jerry had brought.
Seeing that, Jerry realized he didn’t bring enough.
“Nina, I bring more!” he said, meaning he’d bring more the next day.
