Ms. Escape: Marrying to Run, Fighting to Rise
Chapter 29 The Woman Before
Eva hesitated for a moment, then smiled and nodded. “Alright.”
Adriana took a bite of the mashed potatoes with vegetalles and ground meat–it was perfect.
So, this was how the rich lived–never needing to lift a finger for anything.

All that poise she’d once admired in Natasha and it turned out it was just the confidence that came from a life padded by wealth.
Her phone rang. Adriana glanced at the screen, only to see it was a call from Neville.
Since the last time she’d involved the media, the university had been threatening to withhold her diploma. And now, he was calling her?
“Adriana, we’ve secured your study abroad placement. The university had to fight to get you an extra place. So, uh … Could you maybe take down those posts you made online?” Neville asked sweetly.
“Mr. Smith, wasn’t that placement secured by someone else and not you?” Adriana said with a slight smile.
Neville paused awkwardly, then tried again. “Adriana, the university is your alma mater. You shouldn’t do things that damage our reputation. One should practice gratitude.”
Adriana set down her fork, thought for a moment, and replied with a smile, “When I was beaten until I lost hearing in one ear, had my fingers stomped on, and was nearly left to die in the equipment room What did you say back then? Something like, ‘If you report it or make trouble, you won’t get your diploma, right?”
On the other end, Neville went completely silent.
Then, he ended the call without saying a word.
Adriana found it almost funny.
She didn’t even have time to put her phone down befor it rang again.
“Hello?”
“Adriana, this is the HR department from Langford Group. You still haven’t officially submitted your resignation. If you continue to miss work without notice
“I already handed in my resignation,” Adriana cut them off.
This had to be Matthew’s doing, getting HR to call her.
“1
“Ms. Xander, even with a formal resignation, you still need to be present in person to sign the paperwork.” Left with no other choice, the HR representative gave in for now.
“Fine. I’ll head over to sign it at 2 p.m.”
After ending the call, Adriana took a deep breath. The feeling of getting the upper hand felt good. Really good.
Though she knew that confidence didn’t come from heelf–at least not for now. It came from Curtis.
“Mrs. Lincoln, did you enjoy breakfast?” Eva asked with warm smile.

Adriana nodded. “It was delicious.”
Eva smiled again. “Seems like young, health–conscious women all prefer lighter meals. Ms. Reese only cats light dishes too.”
Adriana felt a twinge of curiosity. Curtis’s villa had a bedroom on the first floor just for his niece, and from what she’d seen, Curtis clearly doted on her.
“Ms. Reese… She’s Curtis’s biological niece? I thought Curtis was the only child in the family?” Adriana asked quietly.
Eva paused for a moment, then quickly explained, “No, he’s not. Ms. Reese’s mother used to be Mr. Lincoln’s private tutor. She passed away a while back and left Ms. Reese behind. Poor girl … She’s basically grown up under Mr. Lincoln’s care.”
Adriana nodded. Eva’s words sounded perfectly reasonable, but Adriana couldn’t help but think there was more to it.
After all, who would take in their old tutor’s child for no reason?
Could it be that Ms. Reese’s late mother was Curtis’s first love?
“Eva, do you know why Mr. Lincoln has never gotten married all these years?” Adriana asked, purely out of curiosity.
Curtis had never been involved in any scandals in Harberton. He was over 30 years old and had no rumored girlfriends. No wonder Harold was anxious for him to settle down.
But Adriana didn’t believe Curtis had no romantic history at all.
Just like Matthew, who loved Natasha so deeply, he was even willing to wait for her to divorce so he could marry her.
“Ah…” Eva looked nervous, clearly afraid to say too much.
“Eva, come on. You know Mr. Lincoln and I are just in a contract marriage. We’re basically coworkers. It’s okay. I’m just trying to understand him a little better so don’t accidentally cross any lines,” Adriana said lightly. She wanted to know more about Curtis because of this woman really was the daughter of someone he once loved, then no matter how spoiled or overbearing she might be, Adriana would just have to tolerate it.
Adriana knew exactly the kind of women the upper class raised–women like Camelia and Mia, who were spoiled to the core.
And Curtis? He seemed even more protective than Mathew. If he’d been the one spoiling Ms. Reese, there was no telling how entitled she might be.
“Ms. Reese’s mother was actually Mr. Lincoln’s first love but there was quite an age gap between them,” Eva said quietly. “She was eight years older than him.”
