In the end, to keep her from tumbling off and getting hurt-and to avoid her bursting into loud, ear- splitting cries-he stopped moving altogether, his face stiff and expressionless.
Once he stopped, Nina sniffed loudly.
“I no go down.”
Trevor didn’t understand Nina at all. The harder he pushed her away, the more stubbornly she clung.
She was incredibly willful-very few people could make her listen.
Unable to dislodge her, Trevor simply ignored her again He turned back to his computer and continued working, face blank.
Nina asked a couple more times for Peppa Pig, but Trevor completely ignored her.
If anyone else had brushed her off like that, Nina would have thrown a fit long ago.
But Nelson had explained at the door. His dad was sick, which was why he acted this way and didn’t like talking to people.
For this sick person, Nina showed unusual patience.
When Trevor wouldn’t show her cartoons, she reached for the paper and pen on the desk instead.
She didn’t write neatly-she scribbled wildly.
After covering the paper in chaotic lines, she started drawing on the back of her own hand.
Black ink worked just fine on skin.
Trevor stayed utterly indifferent.
He let her draw all over herself without stopping her one.
Time ticked by slowly. Nina eventually turned herself into a little inky mess.
After finishing on her own body, she moved on to Trever’s hand.

Nina watched Nelson get lifted and burst into delighted giggles.
“You hold Nelson!”
After cheering happily, she pointed toward the living room.
“Eat food?”
It was already six o’clock-dinnertime. Her little tummy was rumbling.
Just as Nina mentioned being hungry, Daniel came looking for them.
The kitchen had already prepared dinner.
Daniel had come to call Nina and Nelson to the table.
When he saw Trevor holding both children, he froze in urprise for a second before raising an eyebrow.
“So you were home after all.” He stepped forward and smoothly took Nina into his arms.
Nina went to her uncle without protest.
Daniel only took Nina, not Nelson.
He spoke to Trevor in his usual casual tone, “Dinner’s ready. Bring Nelson over to eat. He’s been in that wheelchair a long time today-don’t make him sit in it anymore.”
