Scolded by her mother, Nina blinked up at Amelia. Seeing how loud Amelia was, she opened her mouth in a little grin, let out a soft laugh-and then deliberately took another sip of bathwater.
Amelia was truly angry now.
She first patted Nina’s hand down, spilling the water back into the tub.
Then she gave Nina’s mouth a light tap.
“Still drinking? If you drink again, Mommy will spank you.”
This wasn’t the first time Nina had drunk bathwater.
She’d done it before.
One spanking would keep her in line for a while, but after some time passed, she’d forget the punishment and do it again.
Amelia had tried reasoning with her countless times-it never worked.
This time, after being lightly smacked again, Nina’s mouth trembled.
But instead of crying, she just looked up at Amelia with the most pitiful, wronged expression.
Amelia stared back at her, refusing to soften immediately.
“Mommy…”
Abandoned by Amelia’s stern face, Nina reached out and grabbed Amelia’s hand.
She wasn’t being naughty anymore.
Sniffling, she called out in a tiny, aggrieved voice while rubbing her eyes with her other chubby hand.
“I no cry.”
Nina usually wailed after being spanked.
This time, she wanted to cry too, but she held it back.
She hiccupped softly. “I cry many.”
She meant she had already cried so much today, so now she didn’t want to cry anymore.
Hearing her words, Amelia suddenly leaned in close to examine Nina’s eyes,
“Do your eyes hurt a little?” she asked.
Nina nodded. “Hurt.”
Amelia’s stern expression melted away. She lifted Nina out of the water, wrapped her in a fluffy towel, and carried her to the bed.

Amelia asked her to boil an egg. She used the warm, hard-boiled egg to gently press against Nina’s puffy eyes, hoping to reduce the swelling.
While Nina was being bathed by Amelia, Nelson was being bathed by his father.
After both children were clean, they were reunited.
Nina wore one of Nelson’s pajamas for the time being.
The two little ones played together again. While Nina was distracted, sticking decals, Trevor quietly left the
room.
He didn’t go far-he returned to his own bedroom.
With so many people in the house today, Trevor didn’t feel comfortable leaving entirely.
His room still held many of his wife, Grace Smith’s, belongings.
Everyone had told him Grace was dead.
She had died giving birth.
They said Grace had never loved him-she loved someone else.
