“I once asked my dad about it. Since he had Marcus and me, why did he still need to adopt Maggie? Dad said both Marcus and I are too soft. Without someone strong to support us, the Gills would end up just as badly as the Lincolns, the Harrisons, and the Bartons.” Maya sat on the bed and lay back with a sigh.

She had never understood why the feuds between wealthy families never seemed to end.

“Ever since I can remember, my dad retreated to Gill Manor under the guise of retirement. He acted like he was stepping away from the world, but really, he just wanted to avoid conflict. He just wanted to make sure the Gills didn’t get dragged down like the other three families.” Sometimes, Maya wished she could have been just a regular girl from an ordinary family. Life would have been so much simpler and happier, instead of being filled with endless scheming and plotting.

“Marcus was born to be the Gills‘ heir. Maggie’s whole purpose is to back him up. And me? I was born to be a bargaining chip for a marriage alliance.” Maya knew exactly where she stood and what she was worth.

She didn’t want to rebel like some spoiled heiresses, but she wasn’t about to roll over and do exactly as her family wanted, either. She was determined to take control of her own fate.

That was why she was willing to work with Denton.

Marriage was always a gamble anyway. At least by working with Denton, she could control her life to a certain extent.
