Chapter 71 Don’t Get Too Familiar
Adriana noticed Curtis liked to ruffle her hair.

She nodded slightly, realizing that people from these wealthy, powerful families had countless secrets to protect. She was an outsider, so there was no need for her to know everything.
“Curtis … ” Adriana’s voice was low, trembling slightly with fear. “If we have a baby… when it’s born … will you let them know I exist?”
She cared about the child.
Will Curtis just hand the baby straight to Cynthia?
“Curtis, Matthew is bringing Natasha to Harborton for the exhibition, so I invited them over. You don’t mind, do you?”
Before Curtis could catch what Adriana had muttered softly, Danielle rushed over.
Seeing Curtis so close to Adriana, Danielle’s expression froze.
Curtis is famous for being a neat freak and has never let any woman get near him. So why is he practically hugging Adriana?
The mention of Matthew and Natasha immediately made Adriana’s stomach knot with anxiety.
She didn’t want to see either of them.
But this was the Barton Estate, and Danielle was the host. It was her right to invite whoever she pleased.
“Do you really think you can play these little tricks, and nobody will notice?” Curtis snapped at Danielle, taking Adriana’s hand and heading for the exit. “We’re going home.”
Danielle gritted her teeth, restraining herself. “Curtis … Jeremy invited you. You can’t just leave, right? Besides … Jeremy has something important to announce tonight, and Harold will be here too.”
Her forced smile carried a hint of threat.
Curtis stopped, pulling the slightly dazed Adriana into his arms. He leaned over Danielle with a defiant tilt of his head, eyes full of disdain. “You seem to enjoy the drama, don’t you?”
Danielle had deliberately invited Matthew and Natasha to embarrass Adriana.
After all, Matthew had told the media Adriana was his kept lover, and now everyone in both the Bartons and Lincolns knew.
Harold hated this sort of thing.
If Matthew showed up tonight, Adriana would be the one in the hot seat.
Danielle smiled faintly, pretending innocence. “Curtis, what do you mean by that?”
“Nothing,” Curtis said, leading Adriana by the hand to the lounge.

“Curtis … if Matthew comes, can I leave early?” Adriana asked nervously. Harold is coming too. What if…
“It’s fine. I’m here,” Curtis said, holding her hand firmly.
He leaned back in a chair, pulled out his phone, and sent a quick message to Kenneth, then smiled at Adriana. “There’s a lot happening tonight. Just watch and enjoy the show.”
Since Danielle wants to embarrass Adriana, I’ll embarrass her first.
If things really blow up, nobody will care about Matthew and Adriana’s scandal.
Adriana blinked, puzzled. What other drama is gonna happen tonight?
“Oh, right!” Adriana suddenly remembered, pointing shakily at the bracelet on her wrist. “This bracelet! That lady said today it’s worth 500 million. Is that true?”
“That was the auction price. It’s not actually worth that much,” Curtis said, tightening his grip on Adriana’s wrist to stop her from taking it off. “It looks perfect on you.”
Adriana’s fair skin and delicate wrist made the bracelet look stunning.
“B–but it’s so expensive, I’m scared … ” Adriana muttered softly. “I can’t sleep wearing something worth hundreds of millions.”
Curtis chuckled. “Stop overthinking. You’ll be fine.”
“Why did you make me wear it? What if I bump it? I could never pay it back.” Adriana feared a lifetime of debt.
“If you don’t wear it, they’ll pick on you,” Curtis said helplessly.
This family thrived on petty rivalry and favoritism. It was toxic, but hard to change.
Women gained status through jealousy, leveraging men’s attention to secure their place.
Especially in the Lincolns and Bartons, everyone chased power and influence.
Adriana, already surrounded by gossip and an orphan, would be bullied if Curtis didn’t assert his claim.
She stared at Curtis in awe.
He really is a good guy …
No wonder Danielle keeps warning me not to fall for him.
I can’t get attached.
