Chapter 8 Matthew Refuses to Let Her Go
Carrying her wet, dirty clothes, Adriana had just reached the door when Matthew shoved her inside and pinned her against the wall.
His face was dark. He frowned, eyes fixed on her. “Who brought you back?”
The room was pitch black, but his stare cut through like a blade.
“You don’t know him,” Adriana said calmly, pushing him away and switching on the light.
Under the bright light, her legs–exposed by the shorts were covered in bruises and scars. The sight was brutal.
Most of Matthew’s anger vanished. He grabbed her wrist pulling her into his arms, hugging her from behind. “I’m sorry… about today.”
Adriana stood there, stiff and numb, letting him hold her.
Sorry…
Her mind drifted back to freshman year, when Mia had bullied her so severely that she was barely holding on. Back then, Matthew had slapped Mia in front of everyone, forcing her to apologize.
At the time, Adriana thought he was her hero, glowing like some kind of savior, willing to protect her–even willing to hit his sister for her …
Looking back now, it was pathetic. She was pathetic.
“Sorry” was the most disgusting word.
The damage was done. The scars were real. They weren going anywhere.
Apologies were just another excuse for the guilty to step all over the victim.
“Mr. Langford … “Adriana’s voice was hoarse. She changed the subject. “Did your proposal go well?”
She didn’t need his fake apology.
It made her sick.
Matthew’s arms paused slightly before tightening. “Shest got divorced. She’s not ready yet. So for now, you don’t have to worry about me leaving you.”
Natasha had just finalized her divorce. She wasn’t readyo jump into anything, so she kept him dangling.
And Matthew? He was happy to be dangled.
But while Natasha kept him on the hook, he refused to let go of Adriana.
“I swear, I didn’t know Natasha invited her brother. Rufs has been studying overseas these years. She never told me he was back … ” Matthew tried to explain.
He tried to say it wasn’t intentional. He tried to say he didn’t mean for her to be humiliated like that.
“I wired you 100,000 dollars on PayPal. Buy yourself something nice, okay?” He spoke like he was coaxing a child, kissing her lightly on the cheek.

“The Maybach has a Harborton license plate. Who else could it be besides Curtis?” Matthew sneered. “Adriana, don’t be so naive. This world isn’t as simple as you think. You were lucky to meet me. Others … won’t treat you as gently.”
Adriana was too soft, too innocent. Plenty of powerful men had tried to get at her over the years, but Matthew always shut them down. He didn’t let anyone touch what was his.
