Chapter 4
The main hall was blazing with lights. Crystal chandeliers so bright they hurt your eyes.
The Shadowrend Pack went all out—a champagne tower six layers high, even the greeting staff at the door wore new uniforms.
Alphas from all the neighboring packs showed up. Standing around in little groups with wine glasses. Making small talk.
Draven stood in the center of the hall. Sharp black suit. Hair slicked back perfectly. Lilith stood next to him, holding Mortis.
All three of them smiling like a happy family straight out of a magazine.
“Tonight, we’re announcing something big.” Draven raised his glass. Voice cutting through the whole room. “Mortis will officially become the heir of the Shadowrend Pack!”
Applause broke out. Lilith’s smile was so wide her eyes curved into crescents. Mortis clapped along. Looking so proud of himself.
Draven raised his hand. Signaling everyone to quiet down.
“One more thing.” His tone suddenly lifted. “Tonight, an envoy from the royal pack will be joining us. I think you all know what that means.”
A stir went through the crowd. Everyone turned toward the main door. Eyes full of anticipation and awe.
The door opened.
Galahad walked in first. Behind him—a woman. Silver floor-length gown. Hair pinned up. Neck exposed and pale.
Draven rushed over. Perfect smile plastered on his face—eager, but not groveling. He stretched out his hand. Ready to shake hands with the envoy.
“Welcome, honored guest of the Moonscarred Pack—”
The words stuck in his throat.
He finally saw my face.
“Elysia?”
His eyes went wide like he’d seen a ghost. Hand frozen in mid-air. Forgot to pull it back.
“How are you—”
“How?” I smiled at him. “Not welcome?”
“What the hell are you doing here?” His face darkened instantly. Voice low but every word dripping with anger. “This is a formal occasion. Not the place for your tantrums. Go back to your room. Now!”
Galahad stepped forward.
“Watch your tone.” His voice wasn’t loud. But the entire hall heard it loud and clear. “You’re speaking to our princess.”
The hall went dead silent.
Lilith was the first to laugh.
“Princess?” She walked over holding Mortis. Looked me up and down. Couldn’t hide the smile on her face. “Elysia, you really went all out to win Draven back, huh? Even hired actors?”
She turned to Galahad. Tone dripping with pity. “Sir, I don’t know how much she paid you. But let me give you some advice—don’t get mixed up in her drama. She’s a little—”
Galahad’s eyes went cold.
He pulled a badge out of his pocket. Held it up in front of Lilith’s face. Silver wolf king insignia. Engraved with the Moonscarred Pack crest.
“I am Galahad, Beta of the Moonscarred Pack.” He spoke slowly. Every word deliberate. “By order of the Alpha King, I’m here to escort Princess Elysia home. I’ll pretend I didn’t hear what you just said. But if there’s a next time—”
He didn’t finish. But everyone got the message.
Lilith’s face went white.
The silver light rushed toward Draven like a tidal wave. Wrapped around him completely.
He screamed. Dropped to his knees.
I watched his body shake. Like something was being ripped out of him from the inside. All the power he’d gotten from me over the years—strength, speed, Alpha presence—disappearing bit by bit.
He braced himself on the ground. Tried to stand. But his legs were weak as noodles. He opened his mouth. Tried to say something. But only coughed up blood.
“No… impossible…”
Draven knelt on the floor. Looked up at me. Face covered in blood. Eyes so red they looked like they’d bleed.
“Elysia…” His voice was hoarse. Unrecognizable. “You love me, right? You can’t let me go, right? You can’t stop being my Luna—”
I looked down at him.
“You really think the Alpha King’s daughter would care about being your Luna?”
I turned toward the door.
His voice came from behind me. “Elysia! Elysia, please come back!”
Galahad held the door open for me.
The silver train of my dress dragged over the threshold. Disappeared into the night.
The door slowly closed behind me.
Shut his voice inside.
