Chapter 2
I woke to the sound of Asher’s voice.
He stood in the kitchen preparing a nutrient meal for Me according to the pack nutritionist’s
instructions.
At the same time, he used the mind link to sing softly to her because she couldn’t sleep.
Liz scoffed inside my head. “Busy man, isn’t he?”
I raised a brow and silently walked toward the dining table.
When Asher noticed me, he naturally cut off the mind link and pointed at the table.
“Water’s on the table.”
I ignored him and took my seat.
The silence was a relief.
I propped my head against my hand, still half asleep.
“Wake up. Time for breakfast.”
Asher neatly arranged the plates in front of me.
Just as I reached for the porridge, his hand shot out and slapped the spoon right out of my
fingers.
“Hold up. Let me grab a picture first.”
He tapped on his phone and sent the photo to Joy.
Then he finally handed the spoon back to me.
“Now you can eat.”
My appetite was gone, just like that.
I leaned back in my chair and asked, “Why send it to her?”
“She wanted to see,” Asher said, all casual.

“She’s still just a kid, you know. Everything’s new to her.”
“She even asks about the pajamas I get you.”
“And then you sent her pictures of those too,” I said.
Asher froze. He must’ve caught the irritation in my scent, because he let the subject drop right there.
My voice turned cold. “I saw the pictures you took at her party.”
“She was wearing the same pajamas as me.”
A lace camisole set that showed quite a bit of skin.
In the photo, she had her arm looped boldly through his, head tilted just enough for the
neckline to reveal way more than it should.
And that wasn’t the only thing.
Joy always seemed hell-bent on competing with me.
She wanted the same loose curls as mine. The same shade of lipstick.
A regional warrior once gave Asher and me a crossbow during a patrol.
Joy insisted on getting the exact same one made for herself, even though that wasn’t
possible.
So Joy pouted and acted spoiled for a bit, and just like that, Asher swapped our crossbows.
I had engraved our wedding anniversary onto the base of that crossbow myself using moon
power.
Now it belonged to someone else.
“I don’t like this,” I said.
“You’re overreacting.” Asher looked completely unconcerned. “Don’t be so petty.”
“She admires your combat tactics. Sees you as her idol.”
“What’s wrong with wanting the same stuff as you?”

I couldn’t find the words anymore. I thought I should’ve been angry.
I should’ve done what I always did before-fought with Asher until everything blew up in our faces.
But Liz and I stopped caring a long time ago.
Neither of us had the energy for it anymore.
“Yeah,” I said with a nod. “You’re right.”
