The butler stared at Stephen’s back. She opened her mouth, the words already forming on her tongue.
But before she could speak, Stephen abruptly turned around, cutting her off as if terrified of what she might say, “Forget
it.”
His voice tightened. He avoided her eyes, turning back toward the window.
“Go down there. See if the isolation has cleared her head. Ask her if she’s ready to confess.”
The butler froze.
“If she does, then have her call Julia and apologize,” Stephen continued, speaking faster than usual.
“As long as she admits fault, says she got greedy and let one of the Greyson enemies buy her off, we’ll let the whole thing
go.”
He said it quickly, as though the explanation were a shield he needed to finish building before it crumbled. Then he
pulled his car keys from his suit pocket and walked toward the door.
“I have things to deal with. I might not be home for dinner. Take care of Julia.”
The butler watched him disappear around the corner of the hallway. Her lips trembled, but in the end, she said nothing.
She simply remained in the hall, letting out a long, heavy sigh.
Two days later, at evening, Julia sat curled on the living room sofa. A book rested open in her hands, but she hadn’t
turned a page in half an hour.
She finally lifted her head and looked at Stephen, who was sorting through emails.
“Stephen, do you think Maria is still mad at me? Maybe she feels like… after becoming your wife. I dragged a lot of
trouble onto myself and dragged her into it.”
Stephen’s fingers paused over the keyboard. “Why are you suddenly asking that?”
“I don’t know. It just feels strange.” Julia set the book down, her delicate brows knitting together.
“She hasn’t contacted me in days. Even when we fought before, she never ignored me this long. She’d always reach out
first.”
“Do you think she was too frightened by what happened at the park? Maybe that’s why she’s avoiding me.”
“She hasn’t called you these past days?” Stephen’s expression hardened.
“No.” Julia shook her head, worry gathering in her eyes. “Stephen, do you think something happened to her? She seemed

hurt that day too…”
“What could possibly happen to her?” Stephen’s voice turned colder. “She’s just sulking. Stop thinking about it. It’s late. Go
get some rest.”
After escorting Julia back to her bedroom, Stephen returned to the living room.
He stood in the dimming light, watching the sky turn from gold to gray, his fingers unconsciously curling into a fist.
This woman… So stubborn it infuriated him. He had thought a few days of silence would force her to yield. Thought the darkness of the basement would make her understand reality.
But clearly, she still refused to bow her head. Anger crept through him like vines, slow but relentless, tightening around
his chest.
“Butler,” he said suddenly. His voice cut cleanly through the quiet.
The older woman hurried out from the side hall. “Sir.”
Stephen didn’t turn around. His voice was a razor, shearing through the butler’s unspoken pleas. “If she wants to hide in
the shadows of her own lies, then give her total darkness. Cut the power.”
The butler froze. “Sir, that…”
“Isn’t she terrified of the dark?” Stephen finally turned, his eyes sharp as a blade. “Then let her experience it. Let her
learn.”
“Sir… Madam, she…”
The butler’s voice shook. She could barely finish the sentence.
