Stephen released his grip and staggered backward. His gaze fell on the tiny photograph attached to the small white urn.
and yes. It was her. His daughter.
Smiling with crescent–moon eyes, showing those two adorable baby fangs. A picture Maria had taken her to shoot for
her birthday last year.
“She… she was only five….” Stephen’s voice cracked apart, thin and trembling. “She was so young… she said she wanted to
wait for me to come home for her birthday…”
He suddenly remembered, last month, she had tugged on his sleeve, asking hesitantly. “Daddy… will you come back for
my birthday next month?”
He had been flipping through Julia’s wedding gown sketches at the time. Without even looking up, he replied casually.
“Not now, sweetheart. Daddy’s winning a kingdom. Ask your mother.”
The little girl had lowered her head in disappointment, but still whispered. Then Daddy has to eat properly… okay?”
Such a gentle child. Such a well–behaved child. A child who adored him with her whole world.
“Sir…. please accept our condolences…” One of the nannies broke into sobs. “When she passed… your daughter was still
holding your picture… so tightly…”
Stephen stared blankly at the small white urn.
At the smiling face in the photo. At the nearly empty memorial hall. Aside from the butler and a few house staff Maria
had once helped, no one else had come.

“We tried, sir…” The butler’s voice crumbled. “But every time we tried to tell you… you wouldn’t let us finish… You said
Madam was acting… You said she deserved it…”
Every word was a blade, slicing straight into Stephen’s heart.
He remembered it all now.
In the hospital, when the butler tried to speak and he cut her off. At the mansion gates, when she wanted to warn him

and he coldly ordered her to follow instructions.
In the living room, when her hands trembled with urgency, and he simply commanded her to cut the power to the
basement.
“I thought… Stephen whispered, voice barely a breath. “I thought she was just throwing a tantrum… that she’d give in
after a few days…”
He had believed he still had time. He had believed Maria would always be there, waiting for him.
He had believed, after he achieved his dream wedding with Julia, after his perfect future was secured, he could finally
turn back and “compensate” them properly.
But no one waits forever. There is no currency in the world that can buy back a sunset you chose to ignore.
Stephen slowly dropped to his knees before Maria’s photograph, before his daughter’s urn, on the cold stone floor.
The drizzle outside drifted into the hall, dampening his hair, his clothes, his face.
