Chapter 21
María let out a short, icy laugh. “So you tricked me into coming back. What’s your goal this time?”
“I didn’t trick you,” Stephen said quickly. “Ms. Wilson really is sick. I just… I just wanted to see you.”
“See me?” Maria’s gaze was an Arctic winter, beautiful, vast, and utterly uninhabitable for him. “Mr. Greyson, what exactly
is there left for us to see?”
There is something. Stephen took a step forward and pulled a folder from the inside of his suit jacket. “I want you to
look at this.”
He held it out. Maria didn’t take it instantly.
The attack two years ago… wasn’t done by the Greyson family’s enemies,” Stephen said, his voice low. “It was Julia
Stewarts.”
He opened the folder himself. Inside were copies of the police report, Julia’s written confession, and bank records of the
payment she made to the hired men.
“She admitted it. She staged the entire thing. She wanted me to misunderstand you–wanted me to worry about her
more.”
Pain flickered across Stephen’s eyes. “Maria… I misjudged you. I’m sorry.”
Maria finally reached out, took the folder, and flipped through the pages. Her expression didn’t change. She was too calm,
so calm it made Stephen’s heart twist.
“And?” When she finished the last page, she closed the folder and tossed it onto the empty hospital bed beside them.
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
“I’m saying… I was wrong.” Stephen’s voice tightened. “I was horribly, unforgivably wrong. I shouldn’t have doubted you. I
shouldn’t have treated you like that. I shouldn’t have-”
He drew in a shaky breath, a fragile, desperate hope flickering in his eyes.
“Maria… can we try again? This time, I’ll be devoted to you. I’ll treat you well. I’ll be a real husband. A real father. Our
daughter needs her-
That’s enough.” Maria cut him off, her tone glacial. “Stephen, yes… Julia planned that attack. But the real culprit… was
you.”
Stephen froze.
“You were the one who couldn’t stay loyal. You lied to me for six years, and you lied to her too.” Maria looked straight into his eyes, unblinking.

“If you had told her from the beginning that you were married, if you had stayed faithful, none of this would have
happened.”
“But now I don’t love you anymore. Please stop inserting yourself into my life.”
“You… don’t love me?” Stephen shook his head, disbelief tightening his throat. That’s impossible. You loved me so much
before…”
“So you did know I loved you.” Maria suddenly smiled, a sharp, humorless smile. Then tell me, Stephen, how exactly did
you treat the woman who loved you?”
Stephen opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
Memories surged like a tide, merciless and cold. His late–night returns, María always leaving a warm light on for him,
always keeping soup hot on the stove… and he complained she nagged.
His daughter’s timid little voice asking if he could be home for her birthday… and he brushed her off, promising “next
time.”
Maria carrying a feverish child to the hospital alone… while he spent the evening helping Julia choose wedding dresses.
And the basement, those seven days in darkness… he knew she was injured, yet he ordered the power cut, leaving her
alone in pitch black.
“You remember now?” Maria asked softly, watching his face turn white.
“Stephen. love isn’t an execution; it’s an erosion. You spent six years washing away the ground beneath my feet until I
had nowhere left to stand.”
She took a step back. “I have a new life now. Someone who loves me. A stable career. Please… don’t come looking for me
again.”
“Someone who loves you?” A shadow crossed Stephen’s eyes. “Carl Lawrence?”
