My best friend is marrying my husband novel Chapter 6

Stephen visibly relaxed, the tension in his eyes loosening just a little.

I’ll reschedule the flight for the earliest one tomorrow morning.

He slipped back into his usual efficient tone. I’ll have my assistant book the hotel and plan the itinerary. You won’t have

to worry about anything.

No.Maria cut him off. I’ll arrange it myself.

She turned toward the bedroom, her steps steady and unwavering. At the door, she paused but didn’t look back.

Stephen, I hope your wedding goes well.

The door closed softly behind her. Stephen stood there, staring at the shut door. A faint, inexplicable emptiness swept

through his chest. He frowned and pushed the feeling down.

His phone buzzed. Julia asking whether the waist of the wedding dress should be taken in a little more. He typed back,

and his expression softened without him realizing.

[As long as you like it.]

Maria took her daughter to the airport.

There were forty minutes left before boarding. The little girl nestled in her arms and whispered, Mommy, will the place

we’re going have a theme park?

It will,Maria said, stroking her hair. And lots and lots of flowers.

Her phone rang. It was Julia.

Maria answered, and Julia’s panicked voice rushed through the speaker.

Mariasomeone’s following me. A car has been trailing me since yesterday. I’m at the bridal shop right now and I’m

too scared to go outside

Did you call the police?

I tried. Stephen isn’t answering his phone either.Julia’s voice cracked. Maria, I’m really scared

María looked at her daughter’s innocent face, then at the boarding time flashing on the screen. Call the police and stay

where you are. Wait for the officers.

She exhaled. I’ll go to you as soon as I settle my daughter.

After hanging up, she crouched down. Sweetheart, Mommy’s friend is in trouble and needs help. You go home with the nanny first, okay?

Her daughter nodded without fuss. Mommy, be careful.

After sending her off, Maria went straight to the police station. The moment she stepped inside, she saw Stephen. rushing in from the other entrance.

They both froze when they met in the middle. Stephen’s expression shuttered, his gaze turning as glacial as a New York January.

Maria nodded at him and started forward, but he grabbed her wrist.

Maria. His voice was low and sharp. What’s the endgame, Maria? Playing the hero or the martyr?

Julia is inside. I’m going to-

Stop pretending.Stephen cut her off, his eyes slicing into her like a blade. The person following Juliathat was you.

wasn’t it?

Maria’s eyes widened. She stared at him, stunned.

So unwilling to give up?Stephen scoffed, his expression filled with disdain. You’ve loved me for so many years. Are you really willing to walk away just like that?

Each word landed like a poisoned dagger, piercing deep into her chest.

Maria almost laughed. So he knew. He knew she had loved him. He knew she was hurting. He knew she didn’t want to

leave.

Move,Maria said quietly. Julia is waiting.

You should leave now.Stephen released her, but his tone carried a warning. Don’t push your luck.

Stephen!Julia’s voice rang out behind them. She hurried over, her eyes flicking between the two before settling on the

spot where Stephen had held Maria’s wrist.

Julia, are you okay?Maria stepped forward, but Julia drifted toward Stephen, claiming the space beside him with the quiet authority of a queen staking her territory.

I’m fine.Julia clung to Stephen’s arm and smiled. Stephen got here just in time. Thank you, Maria, but I’ll be fine with

him here.”

She added pointedly. He’s my flancé, Maria. Protecting me is a vow he’s already keeping.
