Julian and Ethan didn’t know why Katherine was doing this, but the smart kids caught the change in her face. Something must’ve happened while they were gone.
After closing the door to the new room, Katherine returned to the original one.
Before long. Lucas arrived just as she expected.
Standing outside the door, he said coldly, “Open the door.”
From just those two words, Katherine could hear the fury in his voice.
She took a deep breath at the doorway and pulled it open. Lucas’s expression was frighteningly dark.
“Lucas, what will it take for you to believe me? I didn’t push her. There were only two of us in that cabin. If she had really died, would I have escaped responsibility? Do you think I’m stupid enough to destroy myself just to hurt her”
“So you finally admitted the truth?” Lucas said coldly. “You pushed her out of the cabin, but she didn’t fall immediately. You were afraid she’d actually die, and you wouldn’t escape legal punishment, so you saved her. But you didn’t want her to get off too easily, so when she was only about 20 feet from the ground, you deliberately let go so she’d still get hurt.”
Katherine froze. “Why does every explanation I give get twisted into something so vicious by you?”
“Because you are vicious. Katherine, think about everything you’ve done since coming back. How many times have you bullied her? Can you even count them anymore?”
“I’m vicious?” Katherine thought she’d never feel hurt by Lucas’s words again, but hearing those three words still made her feel like she couldn’t breathe.
“Then what about Rachel? What is she in your eyes? Gentle? Harmless? Kind? Fragile?”
Lucas looked at her silently for a long moment. le said nothing, yet his deep black eyes seemed to say everything.
Lucas reached out and grabbed her wrist. “Come with me.”
“Where? To apologize to your gentle, harmless, kind, fragile sweetheart?”
“You don’t think you owe her an apology? Katherine, Rachel and the Harts have tolerated you again and again. They’ve already been more than generous.”

“Generous?” Katherine’s eyes turned red. “Lucas do you even know what they’ve done behind your back? This morning, Rachel held a knife to Ivy and forced me to apologize. Tonight, the Harts came to my house to smash things and set fires. If they hadn’t provoked me first, why would I have fought back? Why should I apologize to them?”
A cold light flashed in Lucas’s eyes. Clearly, he hadn’t known about any of this. Hearing it now from Katherine made doubt appear in his gaze.
“A lot of this-you could just look into it, and you’d see I’m telling the truth. Why won’t you check?”
Katherine shook off his hand and shouted at him, “We’re still technically married right now. Why can’t you show even a little trust toward me, your wife? Why do you always take someone else’s side?
“You asked me before why I’m so desperate to divorce you. Look at me right now—that’s your answer. I’m miserable. Being with you means enduring endless hostility and humiliation. I’m hurting all the time. Do you even understand that?”
Lucas’s hand clenched at his side. Katherine rarely lost control like this.
Looking at her, a sudden ache spread through his chest. It felt as if an invisible hand had pierced through him, gripping his heart and crushing it again and again.
He hadn’t felt anything like this even when Rachel fell from the Ferris wheel.
When Rachel got hurt and cried in front of him his reaction had been nothing more than normal human concern.
Rachel cried often-sometimes, he even felt annoyed by it.
But now, watching tears slide down Katherine’s face, his heart actually hurt. Listening to her words, a flicker of doubt about his own judgment rose inside him.
Yet the next moment, he reminded himself that between Katherine and Rachel, the one who always ended up hurt was Rachel.
If Katherine were truly innocent, why would Rachel peatedly hurt herself just to frame her?
And setting aside what happened that morning, he couldn’t forget the scene tonight, where. the Harts were hoisted up by her and Marsh.
He remembered seeing Katherine whipping Rachel with a lash. He had seen her cruelty with his own eyes.
No one could have framed her for that.
