When Lucas stepped outside, he saw her lying collapsed on the ground. In that second, fear and panic slammed into him. The usually calm, steady man completely broke down as he ran toward her.
“Katherine?” Lucas whispered in disbelief. He pulled her into his arms, his hands shaking badly.
She was unconscious. When he lifted his hand, it was stained with blood.
It felt like his heart had cracked apart.
Katherine was rushed to the hospital.
Lucas waited outside the emergency room, replaying everything that had just happened. It felt unreal.
He stared at his hands in a daze and suddenly felt a deep, bone-chilling cold.
How did it turn out like that?
How did it become so serious?
A nurse walked out with a surgical consent form and told him to sign.
Lucas looked at the paper, stiffly took the pen, and signed his name as he did on business deals every day. The only difference was that his hand wouldn’t stop shaking.
After signing, he looked at the nurse and asked hoarsely, “Will she be okay?”
“She’s badly hurt. You should be prepared,” the nurse said quickly before going back inside.
Her words kept ringing in his ears. He frowned, almost thinking he heard wrong.
Katherine had been fine just moments ago. Why did he suddenly need to prepare for the
worst?
He stepped closer, but the cold metal doors closed in front of him.
His fists tightened as pain spread from his chesthrough his whole body.

He didn’t want to believe it, but the nurse’s words wouldn’t leave his mind. Katherine had been hit by a car. She might die.
If he had let her go, that wouldn’t have happened.
He had forced her to stay. Because of his stubbornness and obsession, she got into that accident. If she died, it would be his fault.
Regret crashed over him. His chest hurt so much that he could barely breathe.
If something really happened to her, he would never forgive himself.
Time passed slowly. More than four hours passed. At one point, a nurse asked him to pay the hospital bill. His thoughts were still stuck in the emergency room, but he followed every step and hurried back.
At last, a doctor came out, took off his mask, ani sighed.
Lucas’s heart tightened. A terrible feeling hit him.
“How is she?”
The doctor looked at him apologetically and shook his head. “Sir. we tried our best. Your wife’s injuries were too serious. She didn’t make it. We’re very sorry.
It felt like something blew up in Lucas’s head.
The words hit him hard. Everything inside him seemed to fall apart.
Silence filled the empty hallway.
He stood there like the world had gone dark.
He didn’t cry or shout, but his eyes turned red. He thought he must have misheard.
He had to have.
How could Katherine be dead?
She had been arguing with him earlier, full of energy. Now they were saying she was gone?
It had to be a lie.
Lucas pushed past the doctor and tried to rush inside.

The doctor quickly stopped him. “Sir, this is the operating room. You can’t go in. Please calm down.”
“Get lost!” Lucas grabbed the doctor’s coat, his eyes bloodshot. “You’re saying she’s dead? I don’t believe you!”
“Sir. please calm down. She’s really gone.”
“Get out of my way!” Lucas roared like a wild beast and shoved the doctor aside.
The doctor couldn’t stop him. Lucas forced his way into the emergency room while the staff tried to block him.
“Sir, you can’t come in!”
“Please leave-”
He ignored them and kept walking forward.
Even though he knew doctors wouldn’t joke about death, even though he knew it might be true, he refused to accept it until he saw her himself.
Tears suddenly fell. With each step, the despair grew heavier.
He killed Katherine.
It was his fault.
