Katherine was already guessing what Lucas would ask next, like why Ivy came to Crestburg alone.
“Why did Ivy come to Crestburg by herself?” Lucas asked deeply.
She guessed right.
On the way here, she and Megan had already practiced their answers.
Megan quickly said, “Ivy came to look for her dad.”
Lucas didn’t speak, signaling for her to continue
“Her father is in Crestburg. I mentioned him before, and she’s always wanted to find him. I’m usually busy with work. I didn’t watch her closely yesterday, and she came here alone.”
“So you’re saying your child bought a plane ticket alone, went to the airport alone, and boarded the plane alone?”
“Yes. There’s nothing strange about that. Ivy doesn’t have a dad around, so I raised her to be independent.”
For every question, Megan had an answer ready. There were no obvious loopholes.
Katherine quietly watched Lucas, afraid she might see suspicion on his face.
After a short silence, he asked again, “What’s her father’s name? I can help her find him.”
Katherine’s heart skipped.
That was a test.
Lucas never cared about other people’s business
Megan swallowed. “That won’t be necessary. I have nothing to do with him anymore. I don’t want to see him. Ivy doesn’t need that kind of father anymore. But thanks for your kindness –and for taking care of her.”
Lucas ignored her words. He took out his phone and looked at the call history. “Was your phone off all day?”
He had called her many times, and she hadn’t answered once.
Katherine subconsciously touched the phone in her pocket.

From the first time, he had suspected the voice on the phone wasn’t the same person who picked Ivy up.
Sure enough, he dialed a number and placed his phone on the table. It was Katherine’s number.
The scene turned silent.
The next second, Katherine’s phone started ringing in her pocket.
Lucas’s sharp gaze locked onto her instantly.
That probing, suspicious stare felt endless.
Her breathing tightened. Her hands hung stiffly by her sides, fingers curling.
After letting it ring for a few seconds, Lucas asked coldly, “Aren’t you answering?”
Katherine lowered her eyes and slowly took out her phone.
In the quiet scene, only the ringtone could be heard.
Lucas stared at her face, not missing any change. The tension grew heavier.
She looked at the screen and slid to answer.
“Hello…”
Lucas glanced at his own phone. The call hadn’t connected yet on his side, but Katherine’s phone already carried the other party’s voice.
At the same time, Megan pulled a vibrating phone from her bag and showed it. “Mr. Grant, do you still think I’m not Ivy’s mother?”
Lucas frowned. Megan hung up, and his phone played the busy tone right away.
He was suspicious.
Too many things didn’t add up.
He couldn’t stop doubting.
“Mr. Grant, no matter what you think, Ivy is my daughter. She calls me Mommy. I don’t know what you’re suspecting. Do you think I’m a child trafficker?”

Megan’s voice grew sharper. “Thank you again. But please stop questioning me. I’ll take Ivy
home now.”
Ivy waved. “Bye, Mr. Grant. Bye, Katherine.”
Megan left-with Ivy.
Lucas stayed silent, his face dark.
Did he really guess wrong?
He kept wavering between doubt and certainty. Frustration built up. He pinched
of his nose.
Katherine finally ended the call. Seeing Ivy leave safely, she quietly let out a breath of relief.
Lucas would never know she actually had two phone numbers.
Before coming in, she had moved one number to Megan’s phone just in case.
Good thing she prepared. Otherwise, everything would’ve been exposed.
Katherine turned back to him. “Anything else? If not, I’m leaving.”
“You’re not done yet. Where do you think you’re going?” His voice was colder than before.
He wasn’t letting her leave.
Her temples throbbed. “What do you want?”
Lucas suddenly stood and walked toward her step by step.
Katherine watched him warily. “What are you doing? Hey, you—”
Her heart tightened as he got closer. Without warning, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her close. “Do you know it cost ten million just to clean up your mess from last night?”
“Ten million?!” Her eyes widened.
What could cost that much?
“What do you mean?”
“Reputation damage. An apology to the Harts. Otherwise, do you think you’d still be here arguing with me? Do you think the Harts would just let their daughter be bullied by you?”
