Lucas narrowed his eyes, his gaze sweeping over her inch by inch.

When his eyes landed on Katherine’s left shoulder, his brow furrowed.

There was a faint scar there. It was light but long winding from her shoulder down to her collarbone.

Because of the scar, she had deliberately gotten tattoo to cover it.

The tattoo was beautiful and pale pink, blending over the scar as if the two were one. If you did not look closely, you would not notice it at all.

But the winding scar was enough to show that Katherine had once been seriously hurt. Lucas’s heart suddenly tightened. He lifted his long fingers, wanting to touch it, but Katherine quickly dodged away.

Her eyes were tense and guarded, watching him as if he were some kind of predator. If you looked carefully, you could see her thin body trembling slightly.

Lucas’s brows drew together.

The scar made him forget his original purpose for a moment. Several seconds passed before he remembered. He stared carefully at her shoulder again, but by then he could not tell whether there had ever been a birthmark there.

Katherine felt deeply insecure at that moment. She forced herself to meet Lucas’s eyes and caught the flash of complicated emotion in them.

A trace of mockery appeared in her gaze.

He had not gotten the answer he wanted, so now he was unhappy.

“The scar. How did it happen?”

Just when Katherine thought he would directly ask about the birthmark, she suddenly heard him ask, in a low voice, a question that had nothing to do with his original purpose.

“Does that matter to you?”

“It matters.” Lucas lifted his eyes and stopped staring at her body. His gaze settled on her face.

He could not remember whether she had a birthmark on her body.

But Lucas knew that during those three years, Katherine had not had any scars. That meant

this scar had been left during her time in Yarbrough.

Seeing such a long scar, his heart had ached for a moment. A mess of emotions surged up, leaving him unable to explain them even to himself.

Katherine did not answer his question.

She had gotten that scar in her third year in Yarbrough. At the time, she had been raising three children on her own. A criminal had targeted her, picked the lock, and broken into her home. To protect her three young children, Katherine had fought him with everything she had.

Enraged, the man had slashed her with a knife. In the end, Marsh had arrived just in time and saved her.

Katherine was unaware of what Marsh had done to the attacker afterward. But she would never forget seeing Marsh after the incident, covered in blood, calmly wiping it from his hands. He had looked like some kind of demon king crawling out of hell.

“It’s none of your business.” Katherine pulled herself back from the memory and turned her head away.

Lucas clenched his jaw. Katherine had always been stubborn and proud. She would rather suffer than stay by his side. If she had stayed with him, she would not have had to go through any of this. But she had insisted on leaving.

“Are you done looking?” Katherine picked up the clothes from the floor. “If you are, I am leaving.”

Lucas narrowed his eyes. “Wait.”

“What else do you want?”

Lucas walked into the walk-in closet, grabbed one of his shirts, and tossed it at her. “You are going out like that? Who are you trying to show Change.”

After saying that, he walked out and shut the door behind him.

Outside, Lucas leaned against the wall and lit a cigarette.

His chest felt tight. A nameless emotion made his mood sink even lower.

By the time he finished the entire cigarette, Katherine had changed and walked out. She stood beside him with a cold expression. “You saw it. Don’t forget what you promised about the ten million.”

Lucas continued smoking without saying a word

After saying that, Katherine did not wait for his response. She turned and walked downstairs.

Behind her, Lucas kept staring at her back, his eyes dark and unreadable.

As soon as she stepped outside, a cold voice called out, “Katherine!”

She turned around. It was Rachel, dressed in a bold, stylish outfit. She had just parked her car, removed her sunglasses, and strode toward Katherine.
