Rachel slightly curled her lips when she heard the whispers and stepped closer to Lucas, as if claiming her place beside him.

Katherine searched everywhere but could not find the three kids. She called them, but none of them answered. She was getting anxious.

A voice sounded behind her.

Katherine turned around and saw Fred standing there.

She raised an eyebrow slightly. “Fred, do you need something?”

“Ms. Pearce, what brought you here?”

Katherine glanced in the direction of Lucas and Rachel. “Didn’t Rachel tell you? She invited me. Lucas said he was preparing a surprise for her and wanted me, the ex-wife, to come and embarrass myself.”

She was so blunt that Fred did not know how to respond.

“Ms. Pearce, Mr. Grant asked me to tell you not to walk around. He said he has something to discuss with you later.”

“What does he need to discuss with me? He can just stay with his little girlfriend. No need to worry about me. I heard he’s proposing tonight

“Proposing?” Fred looked genuinely confused.

On her way in, Katherine had heard nothing but talk about Lucas proposing. Everyone was saying it. It seemed like it was true.

For some reason, hearing the news still caused a faint ache in Katherine’s hardened heart. But she quickly steadied herself, lifted her skirt slightly, and turned to leave.

“Katherine.” Rachel walked over.

Katherine stopped.

Rachel looked her up and down. The disgust in her eyes was obvious, though she forced a friendly tone. “Katherine, since you’re here, come watch the fireworks with us. You’ve definitely never seen fireworks like tonight’s.”

Her tone was clearly sarcastic.

She had been his wife, yet Lucas had never even remembered her birthday, let alone prepared million-dollar fireworks.

And now he was celebrating another woman’s birthday like this.
