Chapter 282: Poisoned

We remained like that for several more minutes.

The entire corridor was eerily silent.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the emergency room doors.

Then..

The doors finally opened.

The doctor stepped out, removing the surgical mask from his face.

Alicia was the first to react.

She rushed toward him, and the rest of us quickly followed behind.

"Doctor..." she called anxiously.

"How is she?"

The doctor let out a slow breath before answering.

"The patient is stable now."

For a brief moment...

Relief washed over the entire corridor.

Several people released the breath they had unknowingly been holding.

Including me.

"What exactly happened to her?" I asked.

The doctor looked at me briefly, clearly confused because he hadn’t seen me before.

Before he could ask, Alicia quietly spoke.

"It’s alright..."

Her voice was hoarse from crying.

"He’s her father."

For a second...

I simply stared at her.

I never expected those words to come from her.

Not after everything.

The doctor nodded in understanding before continuing.

"Based on the symptoms she presented with, we suspect she may have ingested a substance that isn’t meant for human consumption."

Someone behind us gasped.

Alicia’s face instantly turned pale.

I forced myself to ask the question weighing on everyone’s mind.

"You mean... poison?"

"Not necessarily, Mr...?"

"Blackwood," I answered.

The doctor’s brows lifted almost imperceptibly.

"I see... Mr. Blackwood."

He continued calmly.

"It could be a household chemical, pesticide residue, or another toxic substance. At this stage, we can’t say for certain."

"We’ve collected samples and sent them for laboratory testing."

"The results will tell us exactly what caused her condition."

My chest tightened.

How could something like this happen?

"But... how?" Alicia whispered.

Her voice was barely audible.

I looked around.

Every expression mirrored the same disbelief.

The doctor gently shook his head.

"We don’t know yet."

"We’ll have to wait for the laboratory results before drawing any conclusions."

Herbert finally stepped forward.

"For now..."

"The important thing is that Aimy is stable."

He looked at Alicia reassuringly.

"That’s what matters most."

Alicia slowly nodded, though she still looked completely shaken.

She turned back to the doctor.

"Can we see her?"

There was desperation in her voice.

"Please."

The doctor’s expression softened.

"We’ll move her to the intensive care unit first for close monitoring."

"Once she’s settled, one family member can see her."

Alicia nodded repeatedly.

"Thank you, Doctor."

Her eyes filled with tears once again.

The doctor gave a small nod before walking away.

A few minutes later...

Aimy was wheeled out of the emergency room.

She looked so tiny beneath the white hospital blanket.

Her face was frighteningly pale.

An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose while monitors beside the bed beeped softly.

She looked so fragile.

So small.

My chest ached.

She was only two years old.

She shouldn’t have been lying in a hospital bed.

She should have been playing.

Laughing.

Holding Alicia’s hand.

Not fighting after nearly losing her life.

A crushing weight settled over me.

transferred onto the hospital bed.

She looked so frail.

So pale.

Lying there, she seemed even smaller than usual.

My chest tightened at the sight.
