The car was already waiting at the entrance. The driver took our luggage and began loading it into the trunk.
I turned around, and a strange sense of loneliness suddenly settled over me.
I had lived in this mansion for two years.
When I first arrived, I had been broken, lonely, and hollow. But little by little, everyone here had shown me what it meant to be cared for. They had loved me, looked after me through my pregnancy, welcomed Aimy into the family, and helped me through every stage of motherhood.
I had never imagined I’d be leaving so soon.
I knew it would only be for a few days, but for some reason, it felt as though I was abandoning everything I had built all over again.
Anna and I got into the car.
As we drove past the towering iron gates, I looked back through the rearview mirror.
The mansion gradually grew smaller and smaller until it disappeared from sight.
For some reason...
My heart felt even lonelier.
The ride back to the hospital was unusually quiet.
Even Anna seemed downhearted.
She had been the one who guided me through everything, always standing by my side. She wasn’t just my cousin anymore, she had become my closest friend, my sister.
She often reminded me of Ariana and Sophie.
Sometimes she was carefree and cheerful like Sophie.
Other times she was calm and dependable like Ariana.
Somehow, she carried the best parts of both of them.
I was really going to miss her during the few days we’d be away.
A few minutes later, we arrived at the hospital.
On the way, we’d stopped to buy some fresh fruit, so Anna carried the bags while I walked beside her.
Even before reaching Aimy’s room, I heard a familiar male voice speaking gently.
At first, I thought I had imagined it.
But the moment I pushed the door open, I froze.
President Evan was sitting beside Aimy’s bed while she was still laid down, listening to him happily. Aunt Margaret watched the two of them from the sofa with a smile.
All three turned toward the door when we entered.
"President Evan," I greeted.
Anna greeted him as well before setting the fruit on the table.
"Alicia," he said with a slight frown. "You didn’t tell me Aimy was sick."
"I’m sorry," I replied apologetically. "Things have been a little hectic these past few days."
"It’s alright." He smiled reassuringly.
I walked over to Aimy and immediately noticed several shopping bags neatly stacked beside the bed.
I looked at Aunt Margaret in confusion.
"President Evan brought them," she explained with a smile.
I turned back to him.
"You really didn’t have to..."
"What do you mean?" Evan chuckled. "Aimy is my little friend. It’s the least I could do."
"Mummy!" Aimy called happily. "Uncle bought me new toys!"
Her voice was still weak, but it sounded stronger than before.
"And did you thank Uncle?" I asked.
She nodded.
I smiled.
"Good girl."
I gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear before saying, "Come on. Let’s get you changed into something more comfortable."
President Evan looked at me, puzzled.
"Are you being discharged already?"
I exchanged a glance with Anna before answering.
"We’re leaving for Velaridge City. The doctors there will be able to give Aimy better treatment."
His brows knitted together slightly.
"Today?"
I nodded.
He looked back at Aimy, his expression softening.
"I’m going to miss you, little one."
"We’ll be back soon," she declared both confidently and weakly.
Evan smiled warmly.
"I’ll hold you to that."
I carefully helped Aimy get changed.
Afterward, I sat beside her bed and fed her while she ate obediently.
Just then, the door opened.
