She rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand, as though expecting me to disappear. But when she opened them and found me still there, she sat up abruptly and glanced around the room, making my hand slip from her waist.
The sudden emptiness lingered.
Quietly, I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood. "I must have fallen asleep while soothing Aimy. Sorry about that."
She said nothing, her gaze returning to our sleeping daughter.
"It’s still early," I added. "You should get some more rest."
I had almost reached the door when her soft voice stopped me.
"You should go to the office."
I turned back. "What?"
"You’ve already stayed in Rosewood Town longer than you planned because of us. I’m sure there are things waiting for you there. Maria is here now."
She spoke as though she and Aimy were burdens I had graciously agreed to carry.
"What are you saying, Alicia? Aimy is my daughter, and you—"
"I just mean that you shouldn’t let us disrupt your life," she interrupted gently.
A helpless chuckle escaped me. How could I explain that, without them, I barely had a life at all?
"I’ll go to the office," I said at last. "But when I get back, we need to talk. Alright?"
She looked confused, but simply lay back down and closed her eyes.
I returned to the master bedroom, gathered a few things, and headed to a guest room to get ready. I had woken up later than usual, so I skipped my workout.
The truth was, I had never intended to go in. Even while we were in Rosewood Town, I had been handling work remotely, despite the constant calls demanding my attention. After returning, I had planned to continue working from the villa so I could stay close to Aimy.
But Alicia’s words lingered.
I couldn’t blame her. I was the one who had taught her, through my actions, that there were things that would always come before her. And even now, she still believed it.
A moment later I stepped out of the shower and slipped into a black suit. I had decided to go to the office after all, but only long enough to deal with the urgent matters before returning home. I wanted to spend a few more days working from the villa until Aimy recovered.
After knotting my tie, I picked up my phone and laptop and left the guest room.
The room I had used was only a short walk from Aimy’s room and the master bedroom. On my way downstairs, I decided to check on them one last time.
But when I entered Aimy’s room, the bed was empty.
I stepped farther inside, searching for any sign of Alicia or Aimy. When I found non, I assumed they were in the bathroom and turned to leave.
But as I passed the master bedroom, I heard voices inside. One of them was unmistakably Alicia’s.
I pushed the door open.
She stood in the middle of the room while a maid faced her with her head bowed.
"If you won’t move my things to another room, then fine—I’ll do it myself," Alicia said, turning toward the walk-in closet.
"What’s going on here?"
The maid looked up, relief flashing across her face. Alicia, however, didn’t pause.
I turned to the maid.
"Sir, I told Madam that this is where you asked us to place her things," she said quietly. "But she wants to move to another room."
