Chapter 213: Chapter 213: The Tranquil Inn

Cecelia Archer stormed out of the noodle shop in a huff. "Where are you rushing off to?" she asked. Dressed in a sharp suit, the distinguished President Vaughn, who looked completely out of place here, furrowed his brow and glanced around. Suddenly, he spotted a place called "The Tranquil Inn."

’He hadn’t slept at all last night and was suddenly exhausted.’

’Anywhere was fine, as long as he didn’t have to go straight back to Veridia.’

"There."

He started walking toward the small inn ahead of her.

Cecelia Archer watched his retreating back, her eyes widening in confusion as she looked at the inn he had pointed to.

’This place obviously didn’t have any high-end hotels. Could he really stomach staying in a low-rent inn like this? Did he have any idea what the hygiene and lodging conditions in a small inn were like?’

Cecelia Archer hurried after him. "Small inns like this usually have pretty poor facilities and hygiene. Are you sure you want to go in?"

Damien Vaughn paid her no mind and walked inside.

The storefront was tiny. A wooden counter was tucked into the corner by the staircase, where a middle-aged woman with curly hair sat, listlessly cracking melon seeds.

When she saw someone enter—and a handsome, exceptionally well-dressed man at that—she immediately perked up and stood with a beaming smile.

"Well, hello there, handsome! Looking for a room? How many people? We happen to have a deluxe room available, with 24-hour hot water. You’ve come to the right place!"

Damien Vaughn glanced at her, his face devoid of expression.

"I’m just passing through and didn’t plan for an overnight stay, so I don’t have my ID. Can I still get a room?"

"Staying the night?"

"Depends on my mood."

"No problem. We have security cameras, so there usually aren’t any issues. Besides, you’re too handsome to be a bad guy. So, the deluxe room?"

"How much?"

"68. The standard rooms are 48 and 38, but I can tell you’re the type to pick the 68."

Damien Vaughn handed her a 100.

"Change the sheets and the duvet cover to a new set. Keep the change."

The landlady was overjoyed. She gleefully grabbed a set of bedding from a cabinet and chattered away as she led him upstairs.

"All our bedding is new, and our hygiene is top-notch, so don’t you worry! This place may be small, but we get inspected several times a year. We’re a legitimate business! I even wash the bedding myself. See? So white!"

After climbing the stairs to the fifth floor, the landlady opened the door, revealing a very simply and dated-looking room.

Although it looked to be over 30 square meters, which wasn’t too small, the room contained only a yellow wooden-plank bed, two nightstands, and, across from the bed, a wooden TV stand with a television connected to a set-top box. There was nothing else.

The landlady, however, was very satisfied with her room.

"See how clean it is? And so bright! Just pull open these curtains... look at that sunlight, that view! Isn’t it amazing?"

"And our bathroom, isn’t it spacious? The toilet is scrubbed sparkling clean—I do it myself!"

Damien Vaughn scanned the room, then glanced toward the bathroom door.

’It wasn’t too small, and the bathroom was passably clean. At least the floor was white, and there wasn’t anything disgusting in the corners.’

Thanks to the excellent sunlight, the entire room didn’t have any strange odors.

"Put the new set on, then you can go."

The landlady cheerfully went to change the bedding, only then noticing Cecelia Archer following behind them.

Cecelia Archer was pretty and tall, with an equally refined air about her. One look and you could tell they were a couple.

"You two make such a perfect couple! I can tell you’re from the big city. We don’t get couples as handsome and beautiful as you in our little town. Oh, it’s just wonderful."

"How old are you two? Why are you passing through? Where are you headed? Young lady, you haven’t had kids yet, have you? Look at that tiny waist! Oh my, just like mine when I was eighteen!"

’How did she figure out we were a couple? This landlady is way too sharp.’

Cecelia Archer ignored her and looked at Damien Vaughn.

"President Vaughn, since you’re tired, please rest here for a bit. I’ll go find roadside assistance. I’m sorry for the trouble. I’ll get you back to Veridia as soon as possible."

’So her phone has a charge now, big deal. And she’s going to get *him* back to Veridia as soon as possible?’

When Damien Vaughn heard her deliberately call him "President Vaughn" in front of an outsider, his expression soured even more.
