By the time the orchard owner and Zeke Walton managed to drive off the bees and pull Damien Vaughn out of the swarm, he had already been stung several times.
Zeke was utterly astonished; in all his years, he had never encountered something so absurd.
"What did you do? How could you accidentally disturb a hornet’s nest? Are you okay?"
"How bad is it? Should we get you to a hospital right away? Are these bees poisonous?"
In stark contrast to his subordinate’s panic, Damien was excessively calm, as if he weren’t the one who’d been stung.
"It’s fine. You stay here and continue negotiating with the owner. I’m going to the hospital. Miss Linden, I’ll need you to come with me."
"You’ve been stung this badly and you want me to stay? I’ll go with you!"
Damien gave him a flat, unimpressed glance.
"If you don’t want to work, just say so. What’s the use of so many people going? Are you a doctor?"
Zeke: "..."
"You need to get a clear picture of all the prices today. Visit the remaining orchards, then go back and compile a report for me. Our budget and time are limited. I’m not going to waste any more of it sitting around here with you."
With that, Damien started walking away.
Cecelia, being a former medical student, figured she could help if he had a sudden reaction on the way. She patted Zeke’s shoulder.
"I’ll get going then. Be careful yourself, and try not to get stung. I’m leaving the phone with you. See you at the hotel when you’re done."
Outside the orchard, Damien was already sitting on the electric scooter.
Although he acted calm, his stung arm was already starting to swell and turn red. He had stings on both arms and his legs—an alarming sight. Cecelia didn’t dare let him drive.
"I should drive. You rest. Let me know immediately if you feel unwell."
Damien readily agreed. He slid his hips back, planting his long legs on the ground for balance as he moved to the rear seat.
Cecelia slipped through the space between his arm and the handlebars, feeling as if she were being embraced as she settled onto the seat.
His sinewy, powerful hand was right before her eyes, and her back was suddenly pressed against his solid chest. Cecelia’s heart fluttered, and her throat went tight.
"Um, can I have your phone? I need to set up the GPS."
There was a phone mount on the handlebars. Cecelia clipped the phone in and set the destination to the hospital.
"Are you settled? I’m going to start now."
As she spoke, she kicked up the scooter’s kickstand. The moment she twisted the throttle, Damien’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her back fully into his embrace. He rested his face on her shoulder.
"Go slowly. I’m dizzy."
Cecelia: "..."
They rode to the hospital nestled together, the gentle breeze in their hair and the warm sun on their backs. When they arrived, Cecelia told Damien to get off first so she could park, but he refused.
His arms still holding her tight, he slid his hips back a little and said in a faint voice,
"I’m really dizzy. I can’t move. You can’t let go of me."
Cecelia found it strange. Dizziness from bee stings? She supposed it was her own ignorance, as she’d never heard of it.
In her memory, Damien wasn’t a delicate person. Seeing him so unwell for the first time, she didn’t dare take it lightly. She draped his arm over her shoulders and half-carried him into the emergency room.
The emergency room nurses thought something serious had happened. Seeing a tall, long-legged, handsome man arrive, they rushed over to help.
"What happened? What’s wrong? Is everything okay?"
Damien hid his entire body behind Cecelia like a shy child, refusing to let them touch him.
Cecelia had to explain, "He was stung by bees, in several places. He’s extremely dizzy."
Nurses: "??"
"What kind of bees could cause a reaction this severe? Could he be poisoned?"
They quickly called for a doctor.
Hearing Damien’s extreme reaction, the doctor assumed he’d been stung by something dangerous and hurriedly arranged to have the stingers removed.
