The clutch is broken? He’s going to fix the brakes here?
Cecelia was speechless.
If that were the case, he should have felt the brakes failing on the way down. Why not fix them on the flat ground below instead of stopping at the most dangerous part of the corner?
’For the head of the Engineering Department, he’s making such a rookie mistake...’
She was afraid that with one wrong move, Miller and the motorcycle would tumble off the edge. Not only would the Vaughn Group have to pay a huge sum for a work-related injury, but she would also witness a man die right in front of her. On top of that, the project would likely die with him.
No matter how she looked at it, this was a terrible place to fix a motorcycle. Cecelia tried to reason with him.
"If the brakes are out, let’s not ride it. We can push it past this corner. The road is much wider up ahead, so let’s fix it there. President Miller, don’t you think this spot is too dangerous?"
Miller pretended to fiddle with the motorcycle, listening to Cecelia’s words and thinking to himself:
’This damn woman is so hard to deal with! I’ve nearly worried myself bald plotting against her, and now at the last minute, she won’t even cooperate! She’s a tough one to kill!’
He had already told the lie, and even if it wasn’t a good one, Miller couldn’t be bothered to change it.
’Besides, there’s no one around, and it’s getting dark. How hard could it be for a big man like me to kill a weak little woman like her?’
Miller slowly stood up.
"I get the feeling you’re trying to avoid me. I just asked you to hold a phone for some light, and you’re making such a fuss. President Linden, you don’t think I have some kind of ulterior motive, do you?"
Before he said that, Cecelia had a vague sense of Miller’s ill intentions but couldn’t be sure.
Now, she was one hundred percent certain.
That sarcastic tone, the sinister look in his eyes illuminated by the phone’s flashlight...
Alarm bells screamed in Cecelia’s mind. She instinctively pressed herself closer to the rock wall, but her words were still conciliatory.
"Not at all, President Miller. I think you’ve misunderstood. It’s not that I won’t hold the phone for you, it’s just that the spot you’re in is so narrow. I’m afraid you’ll accidentally fall..."
"Afraid I’ll fall, or hoping I will? If I fall, you’ll be the biggest beneficiary of this project. You might even be able to use it to replace me as the head of the Engineering Department. You want me dead, don’t you?"
Cecelia: "!!"
’Does he even know what he’s saying?’
Her current position was Special Assistant to the President of the Grant Group, a far more prestigious role than his as a mere department head! Why would she cross corporate lines to plot against his life?
Cecelia frantically waved her hands. "No, no, no, President Miller..."
But Miller advanced on her, step by step.
"You’ve been here for so long, joking and laughing with everyone else, but you won’t even give me the time of day. What’s wrong? Am I so old and ugly I’m an eyesore to you?"
The path was too narrow; they were only three or four steps apart to begin with. Seeing Miller close in as he spoke, Cecelia quickly crouched down and grabbed a rock from the ground by her feet.
"You’ve been plotting this all day, just waiting for this moment, haven’t you?"
"I don’t know how I offended you, but we’ve known each other long enough for you to realize, President Miller, that I’m not a pushover. Take one more step, and we’re both going down."
’That bitch! Threatening me?’
He’d come this far; there was no reason to back down now. Miller’s eyes widened, and he was about to charge at Cecelia regardless of the consequences when, suddenly, Mr. Mason’s familiar voice drifted over.
"SOOIE! SOOIE, SOOIE, SOOIE!"
It was the customary sound the villagers used to call their pigs home. Mr. Mason was here!
"Mr. Mason! Mr. Mason!"
Cecelia shouted desperately. Immediately after, several bobbing beams of light from flashlights appeared around the corner.
