Cecelia had assumed her brother was at work, so she was surprised to find both him and his wife at home when she arrived.
She hadn’t seen them in a long time. The last time she’d visited was right after her incident. Her brother had been constantly worried about her situation, so it was a surprise for him to see her again, especially with Damien Vaughn by her side.
Her brother hurriedly welcomed them into the house, serving them tea and water. Cecelia noticed at a glance that her brother’s leg had gotten much worse.
Before, he only had a slight limp. Now, he was practically dragging his leg as if he had suffered a severe injury.
"June, don’t worry about us. We’re not thirsty. Please, come sit down and rest. What happened to your leg?"
His wife had gone to the kitchen to wash some fruit for them. Hearing this, she came out holding the fruit with a woeful expression.
"I know you haven’t been back in a long time, and I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but we’re all family. We shouldn’t keep secrets from you..."
Her brother’s face hardened, and he glared at his wife.
"If you know you shouldn’t say it, then don’t!"
His wife wasn’t having any of it, and her voice immediately grew louder than his.
"What do you mean, ’don’t say it’? I told you Cecelia has Damien looking after her! Nothing is going to happen to her, so you don’t need to worry yourself sick. But you just wouldn’t listen! Your leg is already bad, and you can barely handle one job, yet you had to go and get a second one. And for what? To save money for her? So what’s the result? How much money did you save? Do you think Cecelia needs your pocket change? You didn’t earn any real money, and you ended up wrecking your leg like this! Rocky is still so young; have you even thought about how this family is supposed to survive?!"
Cecelia was shocked to hear this.
’My brother took on a second job for my sake! Is his leg like this now all because he’s overworked?’
"June, what’s really going on?"
"Don’t listen to your sister-in-law’s nonsense. I just bumped my leg a couple of days ago while riding my bike and went to work without getting a chance to rest. It’s a little swollen, but it’ll be fine after I rest today. Your sister-in-law just can’t stand to see me idle for a second. If I take one day off, she’ll nag me to death."
His wife was so angry she looked like she was about to jump up.
"I’m telling you, June Archer, can you speak with a shred of conscience? I may not have a job, but what day do I not stay home, washing your clothes, cooking your meals, and massaging your leg for you? I told you again and again not to work so much, but you refused to listen! And now you say I can’t stand to see you rest? Are we enemies, or are we husband and wife?"
"Alright, alright, Cecelia’s finally come for a visit after so long. Can you please stop talking so much?"
His wife glanced at Cecelia and swallowed the rest of her words.
"Fine, fine, I won’t say any more. I’ll go make dinner. You all can chat."
Her brother sat down, holding his leg.
But even after he was seated, his leg wouldn’t stop shaking.
Cecelia couldn’t shake the feeling that this was more than simple exhaustion, and she grew worried.
"I’m fine now; you don’t need to work yourself to the bone for me. Just take care of your own family, and please don’t push yourself so hard anymore. As for your leg, you can’t just ignore it. I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up after dinner."
Her brother pressed down hard on his leg, trying to stop the trembling, and forced a smile.
"It’s really nothing. Don’t listen to your sister-in-law’s nonsense."
Damien Vaughn watched her brother’s actions, his heart aching for the man’s simple honesty.
He immediately took out his phone and called the hospital director.
