Claire’s face instantly flushed.
Before she could even speak, Brandon Jacobs burst into raucous laughter.
"Damn, Vaughn, so she came for *you*? That explains it. I was wondering why someone like her just popped up out of nowhere... HAHAHAHA! Vaughn, no wonder you’ve been off all day. So this is why... Who is this girl? Your taste is really something..."
Wyatt Wynn was also taken aback. Damien Vaughn avoided women year-round, so when he finally got involved with one, it was someone like *this*.
He really marched to the beat of his own drum!
Seeing they had gotten the wrong idea and mistaken her for that kind of woman, Claire grew even more embarrassed and hurried to Damien’s side.
"Damien, what are you saying? I’m not... In any case, I came to apologize. I’ve been so stupid lately, and I keep making you angry. I’m sorry."
He already felt uncomfortable when she got close, even in her usual attire. Now was a different story entirely.
Shaking off his lazy posture, he abruptly stood and took two strides to sit on the opposite end of the sofa, near Wyatt Wynn.
"Here to apologize? How did you know I was here?"
’Tonight, only his two old friends knew where he was, not even Ryan. Was it possible Claire had followed him?’
"You followed me? Claire, you’ve got a lot of nerve."
Claire froze, instinctively starting to explain, but Damien’s brow darkened and his voice dropped.
"Don’t move! Stay there and talk."
"I’ve already made myself perfectly clear. Did you not understand, or what?"
To be humiliated like this in front of his friends made Claire so embarrassed she wished the ground would swallow her whole.
’But I’ve already drugged the wine. I absolutely cannot miss this chance tonight!’
Her nose stung, and tears streamed down her face, a picture of pure misery.
"I understand, but I can’t bear to let go. I love you, Damien. You can’t imagine how much. I think about you constantly... I wish I had more dignity, that I could stop caring about you, stop worrying about you, but I just can’t control it."
"Growing up, besides my dad, you’re the man who’s treated me the best. I gave you myself, my heart, my everything. I’ve considered myself yours for a long time now. I..."
Brandon Jacobs and Wyatt Wynn exchanged a look, once again struggling to hold back their laughter.
’So there really *was* something between this woman and Damien?!’
’And they were just saying Vaughn was a saint, going the whole year without touching a woman. Turns out, behind closed doors...’
’This one looked like she’d be hard to shake.’
’To ignore all those pretty, innocent girls out there and go for someone like *her*... Vaughn, oh, Vaughn. His taste was certainly nothing to write home about.’
Whether it was the alcohol or the sheer bluntness of Claire’s words, a wave of nausea rolled in Damien’s stomach.
He rubbed his temples and closed his eyes in frustration.
"Enough, Claire. It was just one night. It’s been years, and I’ve more than made it up to you. It’s pointless to keep fantasizing about something more."
"Just ask these two guys. At their age, how many women do you think they’ve slept with? If every single one of them was like you, do you think they’d still be alive?"
’Why’d he have to drag them into it?’
The two men, who had been enjoying the show, quickly wiped the smiles from their faces and played along with Damien.
"It’s true. Men like women who are sensible. Take Mr. Wynn here. He’s probably been with, if not a hundred women, at least eighty by now. If they were all like you, he would’ve been pestered to death long ago."
Wyatt Wynn punched Brandon Jacobs on the shoulder.
"Hey, as if you’ve had any fewer! If I’m at a hundred, you’re at two hundred. Bottom line, missy, President Vaughn didn’t treat you poorly. You had your turn, and that should be enough. Don’t ask for more, it won’t do anyone any good."
’So Damien was planning to cut her off for good?’
