If they hadn't figured it all out this morning, seeing him act like this now would have convinced her he had nothing to do with it.
But no matter what Lionel thought, he could never have guessed that they already knew everything he'd done.
Lionel deliberately feigned ignorance. “What did the letter say?” he asked curiously. “Did Quennel get to them, and they finally revealed what they know about Hannah's mother?”
Cherry shook her head and let out a long sigh.
“They still didn't reveal anything, nor did they suggest another meeting. They just confessed that they were lying to Hannah and never had any information to begin with.”
After she said this, the hospital room fell silent.
After a moment, seeing that she wasn't continuing, Lionel couldn't help but ask, “Is that all? Was there nothing else?”
“Besides that, there was one other very crucial piece of information.” After saying this, Cherry gave Lionel a meaningful look, took a deep breath, and continued.
“They also revealed who the mastermind was, the person who hired them to do this.”
Hearing Cherry finally get to the part he was waiting for, he grew tense.
He clenched his fists tightly, his breathing becoming heavier. He feigned curiosity and asked, “Who was it?”
“You don't know?”
“How would I? I haven't seen the letter. If you hadn't told me today, I wouldn't have even known they sent another one. How could I possibly know what it says?”
Cherry shrugged. “That's your business. How would I know?”
“There is absolutely no way I did this, okay? I was beaten up by them! And you were the one who told me they sent Hannah a letter in the first place. If you hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have known!”
Lionel stared at Cherry, completely bewildered. The letter he read said it was Quennel. How had it become him when it came out of Cherry's mouth?
“Besides, why would I do that to Hannah? And as you said yourself, if I was really planning to be the hero, why would I have gone in her place and gotten beaten up like this?”
“If I had really planned it, I would have waited for Hannah to go and then made my heroic entrance. Cherry, are you sure you didn't misread it? Maybe it said Quennel?”
Cherry listened quietly to his tirade before calmly replying, “I saw it very clearly. It was your name.”
