My Fated Alpha's Cruel Game (Elena and Marcus) novel Chapter 330

Chapter 330: Chapter 330 Containment Not Protection

Elena’s POV

Ruth trails behind me, her fingers dancing across her tablet screen while her eyes remain alert and focused.

"They still haven’t told us where we’re going," she whispers under her breath.

"I figured as much," I respond curtly.

We approach the point where the hallway branches off toward both the elevators and the emergency stairs. Without any discussion, the security team starts heading straight for the elevator bank.

"Stop right there," I command firmly.

The officer in charge freezes mid-step. "Yes, ma’am?"

"We’re taking the stairs instead," I state with unwavering calm. "You mentioned this was protective reassignment. Taking him into an isolated elevator goes against that principle."

I watch him pause, and I can practically see the mental calculations happening behind his eyes as he weighs whether to obey my instruction or risk creating more complications.

"Stairs it is," he finally orders his team.

We begin our descent, our footsteps creating an echoing rhythm against the bare concrete walls. I concentrate on the simple, repetitive motion of each step because staying grounded helps prevent my rising anxiety from turning into a public display.

When we reach the middle landing, Asher turns his head to catch my eye. "They’re working hard to separate us completely."

"Absolutely," I answer without hesitation. "They believe physical distance equals total control over the situation."

He starts to smile at my observation, but the expression quickly disappears from his face.

At the bottom of the stairwell, the officers come to another halt while their leader raises his wrist to listen to some kind of silent communication that clearly makes him tense.

"Plans have changed," he announces. "There’s a vehicle waiting outside."

"That modification wasn’t approved through proper channels," Ruth immediately objects.

"It has been now," he responds dismissively.

I move closer to him. "Where exactly are you planning to take him?"

"Off the premises entirely."

"Absolutely not," I state, making sure my refusal sounds completely non-negotiable.

The officer releases a frustrated breath. "Ma’am, I’m asking you to please cooperate."

"You will keep him somewhere on this compound," I continue in the same level tone, "or you will provide me with the name of the specific authority that has the power to override my jurisdictional standing in this matter."

He stares at me intently, really studying my face, and for several seconds I think he might decide to challenge me directly. But then his communication device chirps again, and whatever message he receives seems to deflate his resistance somewhat.

"We’ll arrange on-site accommodations," he finally concedes. "This will be temporary only."

"I appreciate your cooperation," I reply politely.

Asher locks eyes with me. "This is obviously containment, not protection."

"I’m well aware of that fact," I say. "That’s exactly why we’re going to let them reveal their true intentions."

The group starts moving again, this time heading toward a secured section of the building that I recognize immediately. Not because I’ve ever used these facilities, but because I’ve made a point of avoiding them entirely. The auxiliary housing units have been repurposed so many times over the years that they now exist in a legal grey area.

When we finally stop outside one particular door, the lead officer looks genuinely uncomfortable for the first time.

"This action will be officially documented," he warns.

"It’s already being recorded," Ruth responds matter-of-factly.

Ruth exhales unsteadily. "They definitely crossed several lines just now."

"Yes, they did," I agree. "And they wanted to see whether I would panic and chase after him."

She studies my face carefully. "Are you planning to?"

I shake my head slowly. "Not at this moment."

My tablet buzzes against my palm.

Internal system notification appears on the screen.

Protective reassignment completed successfully.

Current status: contained.

That particular word choice feels wrong somehow, carrying weight and revealing more than they probably intended.

I lock the screen and smooth down my jacket, grounding myself through these small, purposeful movements because whatever happens next will require careful precision rather than emotional reactions.

"They think they’ve successfully isolated him from everything," Ruth observes.

"Exactly," I respond. "Which means they have no understanding of what they’ve actually exposed by taking this action."

I turn back toward the main operations area, keeping my steps steady despite the tension building under my ribcage, because this situation was never really about Asher alone.

This has always been about leverage and power.

And now they’ve shown me exactly where they believe that leverage exists.

Which means I know precisely where to focus my next move.
