Chapter 331: Chapter 331 Visible Defiance

Briar’s POV

The moment I name the threat, the building responds with something far more unsettling than alarms or sirens. It answers with silence, the kind that creeps into your bones when systems drop their mask of neutrality. The air around us shifts, becomes heavier, more deliberate.

Ruth remains frozen beside the console, her fingers suspended over the controls as if she’s trying to hear something through the machinery itself. Asher hasn’t moved from my side, but his entire body has changed, loose yet alert, the way a predator looks when it senses movement in tall grass.

My tablet buzzes against my palm.

This time it’s not a message.

It’s a system alert.

Access anomaly detected.

The words make my pulse quicken, not from fear but from recognition. That particular phrasing never appears for technical glitches or user errors. My wolf stirs beneath my skin, not with panic but with sharp, focused awareness.

Ruth curses under her breath and transfers the alert to the main display. The building’s exterior map materializes in crisp lines and muted colors. A location marker pulses near my residential wing, not inside the secured perimeter but uncomfortably close to the boundary.

"That’s impossible," Ruth says, her fingers already racing across the screen to trace the breach. "That access point has been sealed for weeks unless someone manually overrides it."

"Who has that kind of clearance," Asher asks.

Ruth’s expression tightens. "Someone with internal authorization codes."

I close my eyes briefly, not from fear but from the bitter satisfaction of being proven right. This confirms what I already suspected. The warning message was never meant to stand alone.

"They’re escalating," I say quietly. "Not to harm me. To show me they can reach me."

Asher’s voice drops to that dangerous register I’ve learned to recognize. "We need to relocate you immediately."

"No," I respond without hesitation, opening my eyes to meet his steady gaze. "Movement is exactly what they want. They’re trying to make fear dictate my choices."

Ruth glances between us. "Briar, this is too close for comfort."

"Yes," I agree. "That’s the point."

The alert refreshes, and the map zooms in to show a service door cycling open and closed once. Not a full breach, just enough to register in the logs, just enough to send a clear message.

My wolf bares her teeth silently, not from rage but as a warning. This isn’t random chaos or amateur desperation. This is calculated precision.

"They’re measuring our response time," I observe. "And documenting who we contact."

Ruth nods slowly. "They want to see our protocols in action."

"Then we don’t give them new information," I reply. "We keep this contained and visible to our existing network only."
