121 Chapter 121 Final Family Moments
Elena’s POVI
The following morning, I dispatched our best warriors to the coordinates Marcus had provided. They carried detailed maps marking every inch of territory where the creatures had last been spotted, including the exact location where we’d captured the one now imprisoned in our basement.
The scouting party departed at dawn to secure optimal positioning before nightfall. They packed enough supplies for days, though I prayed they wouldn’t need them all. Damien remained behind with me, and we devoted the entire day to our children.
We wanted Caleb and Briar to feel completely loved, to create memories that would sustain them no matter what happened next. Caleb would remember this day forever. Briar was still too small to retain much, but she deserved the same perfect moments.
Skye joined us throughout the afternoon, her digital camera capturing every smile, every laugh, every tender moment between us. The photographs turned out beautifully, freezing our happiness in time.
I noticed Damien watching me with unusual intensity several times. He’d study my face like he was memorizing every detail, every expression. I found it both endearing and heartbreaking. His behavior revealed his deepest fear that I might not return home
alive.
Perhaps that explained why we were pouring so much energy into playing with the children. We wanted them to have wonderful memories if the worst happened. Skye’s photographs would serve as precious keepsakes when they grew older.
“Damien,” Marcus’s voice interrupted our family time as he entered the living room.
“Yeah,” Damien responded, glancing up from where he sat on the floor with Caleb.
“Can we talk privately for a moment?” Marcus’s tone carried weight.
Dan looked at me with confusion. I turned toward Marcus, who assured us it would jusi be a friendly conversation. He simply needed a few minutes with Damien.
Damien rose from the carpet and followed Marcus outside. They walked far enough from the house that even with the window open, I couldn’t catch their words. I closed it again and returned to playing with the children on the floor.

Their discussion lasted much longer than expected. When they finally returned, Marcus headed straight upstairs without a word. Damien rejoined me in the living room, his expression troubled.
“What was that conversation about?” I asked, studying his face for clues.
“Don’t worry about it,” Damien replied curtly.
His serious tone suggested he hadn’t enjoyed whatever Marcus had said, and he clearly had no intention of sharing details. I knew the truth would emerge eventually, so I chose not to press him. This precious family time was too important to ruin with arguments.
As evening approached, I prepared dinner in the kitchen. We gathered around the table, with me feeding Briar while the others ate. The tension in the room had become suffocating, so thick it felt almost tangible.
After dinner, Damien and I bathed both children and tucked them into their beds. We stayed beside them, singing softly and stroking their hair until sleep claimed them.
When I stepped out of Briar’s room, Skye was waiting in the hallway. She’d been listening to my lullabies, and tears glistened in her eyes.
“Elena, please reconsider this plan,” she whispered desperately.
