13 Chapter 13 Accelerated Healing

Elena’s POV

I finally dragged myself up from the floor, my body still aching from the evening’s events. The hot shower felt like heaven against my bruised skin, steam filling the small bathroom as I let the water wash away every trace of the formal event. I scrubbed the makeup from my face, watching the expensive foundation swirl down the drain, and shampooed my hair twice to get rid of all the styling products.

The dress needed to go back into its box. I handled the delicate fabric with extreme care, folding each layer precisely as it had been when I first opened it. Every sequin and bead had to be perfectly aligned. The last thing I needed was to damage something that probably cost more than our monthly rent.

The dry cleaning bill would be a nightmare. We definitely didn’t have money in our tight budget for something that specialized, but I’d figure out a way to make it work. Maybe I could pick up extra shifts somewhere.

After getting into comfortable clothes, I settled onto our worn couch in the living room. The television provided background noise as exhaustion finally caught up with me. My eyelids grew heavy, and before I knew it, I was stretched out on the cushions, surrendering to sleep.

Morning light streaming through the windows woke me up. As I sat up and stretched, I realized something incredible had happened overnight/The sharp pain in my ankle was completely gone. The deep ache in my ribs had vanished too,

Werewolf healing had always been faster than human recovery, but this was different. I’d never experienced anything healing this rapidly before. Something was changing in my body, and it unsettled me even as I appreciated the relief.

I tested my ankle carefully, rolling it in circles and putting my full weight on it. Nothing. No pain, no stiffness, no lingering soreness. It was as if the injury had never happened.

I changed into my gray sweater and black track pants, pulled on thick socks and my running shoes. The morning air would help clear my head, and I needed to move after spending the night cramped on the couch.

The territory looked peaceful in the early morning light as I started my usual jogging

route. My stride felt strong and even, my breathing steady as I found my rhythm. Everything felt normal until I approached the packhouse and spotted a familiar figure on the front porch.

Beta Hugo rose from where he’d been sitting on the veranda, walking deliberately toward the treeline where my path ran. I slowed my pace as he intercepted me, my heart rate spiking for reasons that had nothing to do with exercise.

Beta,” I managed between breaths.

Good to see you’re feeling better,he said, his tone neutral but his eyes assessing.

Yeah. Did you need something?I asked, already dreading whatever was coming next.

Alpha Marcus wants to see you.

Right now? It’s barely past sixthirty in the morning,” I protested.

I’m aware of the time. He still wants to see you,Hugo replied, unmoved by my objection.

I’m busy,I said, gesturing to my running clothes and the path ahead of me.

This isn’t a request,” he said firmly, positioning himself directly in my path.

I stared at him for several long seconds, weighing my options. There weren’t any. When an Alpha summoned you through his Beta, you went. Period.

I turned toward the packhouse without another word. Hugo opened the front door for me, and I stepped inside to find Alpha Marcus seated at a table in the bar area. Papers and files were spread out in front of him, but his attention was entirely focused on me.

You can leave,Marcus said to Hugo, who immediately turned and walked away without hesitation.

Didn’t we cover everything last night?I asked, crossing my arms defensively.

No. I want to know why Viviana was in your house,he said.

I don’t live in a house. I live in a trailer,I corrected sharply. And I have no idea why she was there. She attacked me, I defended myself, and I threw her out.”

She didn’t say anything to you during the attack?he pressed.

Nothing worth repeating. Unlike you two, who were screaming at each other loud enough for the whole territory to hear when you dragged her away,I shot back.
