Chapter 4
Chapter 4
I was fading fast.
Lily sat there scrolling her phone, looking up at me like I was something stuck to her shoe.
“You know what I never got? Why you even bothered marrying in.”
“My brother’s hot? We’re loaded? What was it?”
“Because let’s be real-girls like you don’t belong here.”
I didn’t waste my breath.
Just kept working those pressure points Dr. Morrison mentioned.
Hard as I could.
Even though it was probably pointless.
Lily wasn’t done:
“Only reason Ethan put a ring on it was because you got pregnant first.”
“We figured fine, at least give us a grandson and earn your keep.”
“Then the ultrasound came back-a girl. Grandpa’s face went black.”
“Lucky for us, Sarah’s got a boy in there. Otherwise this whole family would be screwed.”
She walked over and nudged my leg with her foot.
“Point is-stay in your lane.”
“Don’t grab for things that aren’t yours.”
“Once Sarah’s done, you sign the papers, take your money, and get lost.”
“Go marry some regular guy. Problem solved.”
I managed to open my eyes:
“Ethan put you up to this?”
Lily grinned.
“Duh. He sent me.”
“Said you’re too stubborn for your own good. Told me to help you understand.””
I tried to laugh.
Nothing came out.

Then another contraction hit-the worst one yet.
The drugs were gone. My baby was coming whether anyone liked it or not.
“AHHH!”
Lily backed up, annoyed.
“Christ, you’re dramatic.”
She cracked the door open and yelled:
“Someone check if she’s actually delivering!”
A nurse shuffled in, took one look, and went ghost-white.
“She’s crowning… but the blood loss-we need to act now or we’ll lose them both!”
Lily shrugged.
“So act.”
The nurse looked like she might cry.
“We don’t have equipment, no meds-doing this could kill them…”
“Then it kills them.” Lily’s voice was flat. “They’re dying anyway. What’s the difference?”
Lily took off to find Ethan. Didn’t look back once.
The nurse had no choice. She knelt down and tried to help with her bare hands.
But I had nothing left.
Too much blood gone. No strength.
My baby was trapped.
Every second was hell.
Then-footsteps. Heavy. Fast. A lot of them.
Combat boots hitting tile in perfect rhythm.
The nurse froze.
“What-”
The door blew open.
Black-clad tactical team. All armed.
The leader ripped off his helmet-sharp features, hard jaw.
When he saw me, his eyes went red.

“Miss!”
I reached for him. Couldn’t speak.
The nurse shrieked.
“Who the hell are you?! SECURITY!”
He ignored her completely. Dropped to one knee.
“I’m sorry I’m late.”
He lifted me like I weighed nothing and snapped orders:
“Clear it out! Get medical in here now!”
“Yes sir!”
His team moved.
The nurse tried to bolt. Someone pinned her down.
She screamed:
“This is Hayes property! You can’t-”
The man turned his head. Looked at her.
His eyes were dead cold.
“The Hayes family?”
He almost smiled.
“Not for long.”
