Chapter 5
Chapter 5
They threw me into this souped-up medical van-basically a hospital on wheels.
The team was already waiting. The second I was in, they went to work.
“BP’s crashing! She’s going into shock!”
“Baby’s in trouble! We gotta operate-now!”
“She’s too weak-if we cut, she might not-”
“THEN SHE DOESN’T!” The guy who’d carried me in exploded. “Whatever happens, I’ll deal with it!”
I caught his hand, barely holding on:
“The baby… save my baby first…”
He gripped back, voice shaking:
“Stop talking. You need your strength.”
“Your dad’s coming. He’ll be here any minute.”
“You’re both gonna be fine. Both of you-”
The machine started shrieking.
“We’re losing her! Someone grab the paddles!”
“Baby’s crashing too!”
“Get her prepped! Now!”
Everything blurred. Oxygen mask. Straps.
Last thing I heard:
“The baby’s gone! No pulse!”
Then nothing.
I woke up staring at a ceiling I didn’t recognize.
Sterile white. Bleach smell.
“She’s up!”
Faces appeared-guys I’d known forever. Dad’s people.
“My baby?”
My voice was destroyed.
Chapter 5
Dead silence.
Then someone at the foot of the bed turned around.
Dad.
He looked like he’d lived through a war. Hair completely white now.
He sat down and grabbed my hand.
“Baby girl…”
Couldn’t finish. His voice just broke.
I stared at his bloodshot eyes.
Already knew.
“She didn’t make it.”
He nodded. Tears streaming.
“Too much bleeding… the placenta… she went too long without air…”
“They did everything…”
I shut my eyes.
Didn’t cry. Didn’t yell.
Just felt empty.
That little person who’d been with me for nine months. Who’d kicked and squirmed. Who I’d talked to every night.
Gone.
“Where’s Ethan?”
Dad’s face went hard:
“With Sarah.”
“She had the baby. A boy.”
“The whole family’s throwing a party. Nobody’s even mentioned your name.”
I started laughing.
Couldn’t stop shaking.
“Of course. Of course they are.”
Dad squeezed my hand
“Come home, sweetheart”
Chapter 5
Those people don’t deserve you. He sure as hell doesn’t.”
I looked at him:
“Dad. I need something.”
“Name it.”
“A fake body.”
“Make it look like me-just gave birth, bled out, the whole thing.”
Dad went still.
“You want them to believe-”
“I want them to think I’m dead.”
“And then I’m gonna watch.”
“Watch them pop champagne while I’m supposedly rotting somewhere.”
“Watch them celebrate their golden boy while my baby’s still warm.”
Long silence.
Then Dad nodded.
“Consider it done.”
