Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Ethan brought my body back to the estate.
Didn’t even put me in the main house. Shoved me in some side building they use for “occasions.”
Meanwhile, Sarah and the baby got the master suite. Full staff-nannies, nurses, the works.
The old man made the call:
“Keep it quiet. Don’t want anything messing with the baby’s energy.”
“Get her cremated whenever. Just pick a decent cemetery.”
“She was technically family, after all.”
Ethan didn’t say a word.
Just camped out in that memorial room. Staring at the casket.
Three days. Wouldn’t eat. Wouldn’t sleep.
Lily tried to talk to him. He threw her out.
Sarah came by once, baby in her arms, voice dripping sympathy: “Ethan, you need to move on.”
“She’d want you to be happy.”
Ethan looked up.
Long, hard stare. Then: “Think she was happy? When she died?”
Sarah froze. “I was literally giving birth-I don’t know what-”
“She died wondering where the hell her husband was.”
“Wondering why everyone cared more about your delivery than whether she lived or died.”
Sarah’s face drained. “Are you seriously blaming me right now?”
“I could’ve died too! The baby’s heart stopped like three times-”
“But you didn’t die.” Ethan’s voice was flat. “She did.”
“Her and our daughter. Both gone.”
“Guess they didn’t matter since it wasn’t a boy, right?”
Sarah went silent. Arms tightened around the baby.
Ethan got up and walked to the casket. Traced his fingers along the wood.
“Keep wondering-if I’d been there, would it have changed anything.”

Chapter 7
“If I hadn’t stripped the OR for your C-section, maybe she’d be here.”
“If I’d just-
Voice cracked. Couldn’t finish.
Sarah bit down hard on her lip. Turned to go.
Paused at the door.
Just remember-I’m the one who gave this family what it needed.”
“Your dead wife? She’s yesterday’s news.”
Door slammed. Ethan sank down against the casket, face in his hands.
On screen, I watched him fall apart.
Hilarious.
Treated me like garbage when I was breathing. Now he’s sobbing over a box.
Texted Dad: “We good to go?”
He shot back: “Say the word.”
