My Fiancé's 'Girl' Gave Me a Buzzcut. I Gave Her a Subpoena for Their Wedding. novel Chapter 14

Chapter 6

Chapter 6

The fake body was perfect-silicone, blood packs. temp sensors. Slid it into a morgue drawer. Nobody would know.

I sat watching the monitors.

Dad was beside me, hand on mine.

“You sure about this?”

“About what?”

“Marrying him in the first place.”

I shrugged. “At least I learned who people really are.”

On screen, Ethan walked out of delivery, a bundle in his arms, grinning like he’d just won the lottery.

Sarah got wheeled out behind him-wiped out but smiling.

The old man shuffled over, leaning heavy on his cane. Looked at the baby and started bawling.

“A boy… we finally got a boy…”

“The family’s saved…”

Everyone swarmed the kid. Laughing. Taking pictures.

Not one person asked about me.

Not one person wondered if the other pregnant woman was even alive.

Finally some nurse mumbled: “Sir, about your wife…”

Ethan blinked like he’d forgotten I existed. “What about her?”

“Dr. Morrison’s still with her. No word yet.”

“Right. I’ll go check.”

Handed the baby off and headed for the elevator.

Lily jogged after him. “Hold up, I’m coming.”

Feed switched to the first floor.

Dr. Morrison was slumped outside the empty OR, looking like he’d seen a ghost.

Ethan stepped off. “Where is she?”

Morrison couldn’t look at him.

Just pointed down the hall. Toward the morgue.

Ethan’s face changed. “What’s that mean?”

“She… we lost her.” Morrison’s voice cracked. “Too much bleeding. We couldn’t-”

“The baby too.”

Silence.

Ethan stood there like he’d been hit.

Lily recovered first: “Bull. She was fine an hour ago.”

Morrison laughed-bitter, broken:

“She wasn’t fine. Not even close.”

“No blood, no equipment, nothing to work with…”

“I did everything I could, but…”

He covered his face. Dropped to his knees.

“God, I tried…”

Ethan grabbed his shirt, yanked him up:

“Run that by me again.”

“My wife’s what?”

Morrison nodded, tears streaming.

Ethan let go. Stumbled backward into the wall.

“No way…”

“She was healthy… how could…”

Lily grabbed his arm:

“Let me see.”

She ran to the morgue,

On camera, she pulled the drawer. Saw the body.

Face frozen mid scream.

Sheet underneath soaked red.

She stared. Then her hand flew to her mouth and she bolted.

“It’s her… oh God, it’s really her…”

Ethan shoved past her.

The camera caught him standing over the drawer.

Didn’t move. Didn’t blink.

So long Lily got nervous and went back in:

“Ethan…”

He punched the wall. Hard.

“WHY?!”

“Why didn’t someone GET me?!”

“Why didn’t you WAIT?!”

Morrison’s voice came from the doorway, barely above a whisper:

“You turned your phone off… delivery rooms don’t allow-”

Ethan spun around, eyes wild:

“So you couldn’t walk upstairs?!”

“It’s three floors! THREE FLOORS!”

“You just let her DIE?!”

Morrison went silent. Shoulders shaking.

Lily stepped in:

“Don’t blame him. I told him to stay put.”

“Sarah was crashing-I didn’t want anyone distracted-”

CRACK.

The slap echoed off the walls.

Lily’s head whipped sideways. She touched her cheek, staring:

“You just hit me?”

Ethan’s voice was dead calm:

“You locked her in the basement.”

Lily’s eyes shifted. “I just told her to hang tight-”

“HANG TIGHT?!” Ethan lost it. “That was my WIFE! MY KID!”

“I told you to watch her and you locked her in a BASEMENT?!”

Lily started crying:

“I was protecting the family!”

“Sarah had a son, she had a daughter-you know which one matters!”

“Grandpa said it himself-boys inherit, girls don’t!”

That stopped him cold.

All the anger drained out. Left him looking empty.

“An heir…”

“So she was disposable.”

Nobody answered.

Just the hum of refrigeration and somebody quietly sobbing.
