My Fiancé's 'Girl' Gave Me a Buzzcut. I Gave Her a Subpoena for Their Wedding. novel Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Next day, Harper deleted the video.

Even weirder? Cade had breakfast delivered to my office.

Staring at the fancy mango pastry, I smirked. Threw it straight in the trash.

I’m allergic to mango. Told Cade on day one.

He never remembered.

But he NEVER forgot Harper was allergic to pollen.

Turns out love-or the lack of it-really is that obvious.

None of it mattered anymore though.

But the next few days, Cade started acting weird.

Out of nowhere he started reaching out.

“Weather app says it’s gonna storm tonight. Need a ride?”

“Got you that dessert you love from that Seattle spot. Sent it to your office-get it before it turns into soup.”

“Found this guy who makes custom wigs. Super expensive but it’ll look legit at the wedding, I promise.”

More texts than he’d sent in the past six months combined.

Even brought up getting our marriage license.

Two months ago, on our anniversary, I suggested the same thing.

Cade just stared at his phone looking annoyed: “I got work. Stop bugging me with this bullshit. Are you seriously that desperate to get married?!”

Now I was busy prepping to join the field team.

Wrapping up projects. Processing documents. Packing. Running around nonstop.

No time or interest in his “bullshit” either.

Then one day Cade showed up outside my building.

Didn’t say a word. Just dragged me to his car.

Didn’t wanna make a scene at work, so I went.

Time to end this anyway.

He took me straight to a private room at some hotel, packed with people.

Mostly the same assholes who’d been trolling in the comments.

Second they saw me, their faces twisted with disgust.

Harper was there too.

“Vera, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have cut all your hair off like that. I know I fucked up. Please, please forgive me…”

Her eyes got all watery, looking painfully sincere.

Said she picked out a special gift to make it up to me.

“You’re bald and it’s freezing outside. Got you this hat so you won’t freeze. And it’s Hermès!”

It was a knit hat. Bright fucking green.

Room went quiet for a second. Then someone burst out laughing.

“Dude, that is one GREEN-ass hat!”

The mocking stares got worse.

Harper acted like she just realized, tears starting:

“I wasn’t thinking about the color-I just wanted to say sorry! Vera, I swear I’m not trying to make fun of you. You gotta believe me!”

She looked so wronged.

But I saw right through her smug-ass provocation.

Classic Harper move.

Get me to lose my shit, then wait for Cade to come “rescue” her and yell at me.

But I didn’t give a fuck anymore.

“Thanks for the gift. Love it.”

I met Harper’s shocked eyes and smiled, taking the hat.

Eighteen hundred dollar Hermès hat.

Even if I sold it secondhand for half price, I still came out ahead.

Cade looked like he couldn’t believe it either.

He grabbed my arm, eyes kinda panicked: “Harper literally did that to you… and you’re not even mad?”

“How come you’re not losing it on me like normal?”

I smiled sweetly.

“What makes you think I’d be upset?”

“I’m sure she was just trying to be nice.”

Before, HE was the one who hated how jealous and petty I was.

Now I learned to be understanding and chill.

How come he’s not happy about it?

“Fine… Vera, keep playing this act. See how long you last!”

Cade suddenly stood up, yanked off the red cord bracelet from his wrist, and put it on Harper’s hand without hesitation.

I froze.

That bracelet… I gave him that.

A year ago, Cade passed out at work from exhaustion. Got rushed to the ER.

They handed out critical condition notices multiple times.

Everyone thought he wasn’t gonna make it.

Everyone except me.

Nine thousand stone steps. I climbed them on my knees, one step at a time, till my knees were bleeding raw, to get him that protection bracelet

from the monastery.

The night I carefully tied it on his wrist, he woke up.

And I collapsed from exhaustion and ended up with heart inflammation. Almost died.

When Cade found out what I’d done, he held me tight and swore he’d treat me right forever. Said he’d never take the bracelet off.

Now he just ripped it off in front of me and gave it to Harper.
