Chapter 8
Chapter 8
The day Harper shaved my head, she didn’t just take pictures of me. She recorded the whole thing and posted it on Instagram.
Probably trying to keep up her innocent act around Cade, so she hid it from a bunch of people.
But she forgot I’d added her on a backup account.
Back then I didn’t know anything about her and Cade’s messy history.
Just wanted to get along with my boyfriend’s friend.
So that video full of mocking laughter? I had it.
The evidence was rock solid.
I took her ass to court.
Clear-cut harassment and emotional distress.
She wasn’t getting out of it.
Obviously, that wasn’t enough.
I used to work for a media company.
With my old boss’s help, Harper and I made the local news.
Everyone was horrified by what she did:
“WHAT?! She shaved the bride BALD the night before the wedding?! That’s fucking PSYCHOTIC!”
“This is so messed up! If that happened to me I’d lose my goddamn MIND!”
“I’m not even there and I wanna slap her through the screen!”
“Fuck being nice-I’m bout to cyberbully this bitch into the shadow realm!”
For days, the story blew up.
I became “the most tragic bride on the internet.” Got flooded with sympathy.
People recognized me on the street and whispered.
But I didn’t care.
I was leaving soon anyway. Fuck it.
Besides, I didn’t do anything wrong. Why should I be scared?
The other person involved, though? Totally spiraling.

Chapter 8
“I cut your hair and you’re making this big a deal out of it?!”
“Just wait-Cade loves me. When he finds out you tried to ruin me, he’s gonna destroy you, you bitch!”
Thanks to internet detectives, Harper’s info got leaked everywhere.
She was getting death threats daily and took all her rage out on me.
Called me every name in the book.
I didn’t say a word.
Just calmly recorded it and uploaded it as more evidence.
The online hate got even worse.
And right around then, Cade called me again.
Even though I’d blocked Cade everywhere and changed my number, somehow he still found me:
“I’m sorry… Vera, I had no idea you went through all that…”
For the first time ever, he apologized.
Said he didn’t know Harper shaved my head on purpose.
She told him it was an accident. Because he trusted his childhood best friend, he believed her.
Not until he heard the recording of her cussing me out did he realize he’d been played.
Cade said he got tricked by Harper’s fake innocence.
He was a victim too.
“Vera, I’m sorry. I fucked up. I let you down so bad. Please… give me one more chance to make it right?”
His voice cracked with regret: “We’ve been together five years. If it wasn’t for Harper, I would’ve married you already…”
Listening to him pour his heart out, I almost laughed.
Even now, Cade’s “apology” was just him blaming everything on Harper.
But who was it that left me stranded in the middle of nowhere just to pick Harper up from the airport?
Who put a “Harper’s Seat” sign in the passenger side and refused to let his carsick girlfriend sit there?
Who let Harper slip me a sleeping pill so she could pull her little “prank”?
Cade, you’re not innocent.
So stop with the sob story.
And I never wanted some dramatic “chase me back” arc anyway.
The moment I walked out that door bald and broken-that was the end,

Chapter 8
“Vera, you gotta believe me. I know I messed up now.”
“Harper and I-there’s nothing between us. I just got a little cocky because she looked up to me so much. I’ve known her forever, so I got in the habit of looking out for her. But YOU’RE the one I actually love!”
“I bought you the most expensive real-hair wig I could find. Or if you don’t want that, I’ll shave my head too so we match. Please… don’t leave
me…”
He kept begging.
But I was done listening.
Hung up. Deleted and blocked the number again.
Then grabbed my suitcase and headed straight for the airport.
After landing, I took a few days to settle in, then officially joined the research crew.
Spent months traveling around with the team.
Signal sucked, so I barely talked to anyone back home.
Wasn’t until six months later when things calmed down that I reconnected with old friends.
They all knew what Harper did to me.
So they couldn’t wait to fill me in on her downfall: “Vera, you’re NOT gonna believe this-Harper got arrested!”
Turns out all those years she said she was “studying abroad”?
She was actually hooking up with some rich guy. Thought she’d lock him down and live the trophy wife life.
But he was just messing around. Didn’t want anything serious.
Even when Harper got pregnant on purpose, he refused to claim the kid.
After she gave birth, Harper regretted it.
But too late.
So in a fit of rage, she treated the baby like garbage.
Drowned the kid.
Then rushed back to the States and acted like nothing happened.
But she underestimated how seriously other countries protect children.
Got arrested real quick.
As for Cade?
“Ha! That asshole’s about to die. Good fucking riddance!”
Few months back, Cade collapsed at work from drinking too much.

Chapter 8
Got rushed to the hospital again, but because of complications from his previous illness, they couldn’t save him this time.
“Doctors said he’s got maybe a few days left. Even God’s done with his shit. Serves him right…”
For a second, I remembered something.
That year in the hospital when he put on the red bracelet, he made me a promise:
“Vera, if I ever treat you badly or break your heart, I hope I go to hell and suffer for eternity.”
Guess that worked out.
At least he kept one promise.
