Chapter 7
Chapter 7
The days before leaving the country were the happiest I’d been in forever.
Hung out with friends, ate amazing food, laughed till I cried. Felt so damn free.
When they found out I was joining the research team, they were sad but also hyped for me:
“Our first scientist friend! Hell yeah!”
“Wait, does this mean we’re gonna see you on TV one day? Sign something for me right now-I’m keeping it forever!”
“Me too, me too! Vera, don’t forget us when you’re famous…”
We were goofing around outside the karaoke place when one of my coworkers-totally wasted-started stumbling toward the street.
I yanked her back just in time.
A couple steps later, I heard a voice behind me-cold and sharp.
“Vera. So THAT’S why you wanted to break up. You’ve already got someone new lined up!”
I turned around. Cade was storming toward me, pissed as hell.
Harper was with him.
The second she saw me, she gasped all dramatic: “Vera! It’s late as hell and you’re out here getting all cozy with some random guy? What are you THINKING?!”
“Cade’s been worried SICK about you, and this is how you treat him? You’re cheating on him!”
“You’re supposed to get married… How can you DO this to him?!”
Her voice was all sweet and concerned.
But really? Total slut-shaming.
I was about to say something when my drunk friend beat me to it:
“Holy shit, a fake ass two-faced bitch in the wild! Never thought I’d actually see one!”
“Vera was helping my drunk ass and you’re acting like she committed murder or something? What, you want her arrested?”
“Open your damn eyes and LOOK-I got short hair but I’m a GIRL! Not Vera’s side piece! And even if 1 WERE a guy, so what? Vera helped me out and suddenly we’re hooking up? You’re fucking stupid!”
I said calmly: “Can’t help it. Some people have a history of cheating, so they assume everyone else does too.”
“Vera, why are you attacking Harper unprovoked?”
Cade frowned, pulling Harper behind him again.
“She’s just worried about us. She’s on my side!”

Chapter 7
“Oh my GOD, what a blind dumbass! Never seen a man this stupid in real life!”
My friend laughed coldly and kept going: “Guess I didn’t make myself clear earlier, so you came back for round two?”
“You’re clearly deaf as hell. I JUST said I was the one roasting your little girlfriend, but you’re yelling at Vera? What’s that about?”
“When your precious Harper was trashing Vera, you didn’t say SHIT. But the SECOND Vera fights back, you jump in to defend Harper?”
“Biased-ass hypocrite. You’re fucking pathetic!”
Cade stood there frozen.
Getting called out for his blatant favoritism made his face go white.
“It’s not like that, Vera, I-”
He opened his mouth, trying to explain.
But I’d already turned and walked away.
Zero interest in hearing it.
I gave him so many chances before.
He never gave a shit.
He doesn’t get another one now.
And I wasn’t gonna waste any more time or energy on someone like him.
Besides, they were gonna get what was coming to them.
