Chapter 35 She’d Gotten Cocky
“After discussing with Thunder Corps, we all agree we have to drive the beasts outside away.
“So we picked a group of capable ability users to work together with our two corps.
“Here’s the battle plan…”
Twenty minutes later, Reina got assigned to a squad. To her surprise, she recognized someone-the woman who cried and begged for medicine last night.
The woman held a curved blade. She looked much better now, no sign of last night’s grief/
“Hey, I’m Ursula Grisham. Speed Ability. Glad we’re on the same team.”
Reina nodded. “Reina Ashworth. Harvesting Ability.”
Ursula smiled. “Thanks to that Level 3 mutant beast meat you gave me last night, my husband is out of danger.”
“Glad to hear it.”
They talked as they moved out with the group.
Along the way, Reina kept scanning the sky and ground, trying to find her magpie. No luck.
Forget it. If it’s not meant to be, so be it.
The camp gates opened, and everyone rushed out.
The wilderness ahead looked completely barren.
Not even a bit of green left, just dry branches and burned black ground.
There were still plenty of mutant beasts, though. Big, slow-moving ones. They gnawed on scattered limbs and bones.
Reina also noticed that with the plants gone, there were fewer mutant bugs. Some were probably eaten by the birds, and the rest had moved elsewhere.
“Squad Two, listen up! Attack that beast head-on and lure it to the pond by the big willow tree!”
The pond was deep and full of mud. They planned to trap the beast there, then surround and kill it.
Reina was in Squad Two. Hearing the order, she let out a cold smile.
Sounds great on paper, if you don’t care about us dying.
Sending a civilian squad as the front line to attack a 16-foot-tall monster? These people really knew how to play dirty.
If the beast went berserk and attracted more mutant beasts, their ten-person squad would be dead for sure.

Reina quickly looked around, searching for the best escape route.
But she couldn’t run yet. There were several Level 3 Speed Ability Users in the mercenary groups.
Her 22 Agility was nothing compared to their 30+. And they had energy rifles.
The fight was about to start.
Someone fired a flamethrower at a giant beast that was eating.
But the flames hitting its body were like scratching its tough spikes; it didn’t even react.
Everyone else threw their spears.
The giant beast lifted its head and stared at them like they were bugs.
“Roar!”
It charged.
Reina quickly backed up and ran toward the big willow tree.
Who knew the monster had a trick of its own? The air around it, about 30 feet out, suddenly rippled and trapped all ten of them inside.
In an instant, it felt like they were stuck in glue. Their movements slowed to a crawl.
Reina felt it, too. It was like her whole body was wrapped in something heavy and sticky. No matter how hard she pushed, she could only move like a snail.
The beast wasn’t affected at all. In just two seconds, it caught up and slammed into them, sending several people flying.
Reina was lucky. She wasn’t at the center of the hit.
Even so, the shockwave threw her into the air. She spun a few times before crashing hard onto the ground over 30 feet away.
Her insides felt like they shifted out of place. She couldn’t get up, and a metallic taste filled her mouth.
If her Physique hadn’t reached 21-and if her backpack hadn’t cushioned the fall-her spine and organs would’ve been crushed.
But it wasn’t over. The beast charged the others it had knocked down and stomped on them. In seconds, they were crushed into pulp.
Reina saw it all. The fear hit her so hard her mind went blank.
She forced herself, shaking from the pain, to roll over and push up to her knees. Before she could stand, the beast was already coming.
Just a few feet away. Two seconds, and its massive foot would crush her too.
It’s over! I’m dead!
