Chapter 9
Immediately, Chris’s men stepped forward, holding Cora tightly.
Cora was crying and begging for mercy, her tear–filled eyes full of fear. “Chris, please make them let go of
me!”
“This wasn’t even my idea! You’re the one who said you’d help me get back at her…”
“Shut up! You were the one who seduced me into doing this, and now you want to deny it?”
“Hahaha! Chris, you’re so skilled at shifting blame, aren’t you?” Cora laughed bitterly through her tears. “Do you really think punishing me will make Shannon forgive you? Or save the Stevens family? Don’t be naive- that will never happen.”
What Cora said was true. Even if Chris punished her, I wouldn’t spare the Stevens family.
But neither he nor his father seemed to grasp that. Chris still wore an expression of arrogant confidence as
he spoke, “No… she’s just upset right now. She loves me.”
“Otherwise, why would she have hidden her identity and stayed with the Stevens family for three whole
years? That proves how much she cares.”
“As soon as she cools down and I apologize, we’ll be fine again.”
“What are you standing there for? If she won’t crawl out on her own, beat her. Beat her until she agrees to
crawl.”
At Chris’s command, the bodyguards stopped standing still and started beating Cora, targeting her joints and
bones to make sure she couldn’t stand up.
Cora screamed in agony as she was hit, and everyone around her huddled closer, afraid of offending the
powerful.
“I’ll crawl, I’ll crawl with the meat, just make them stop!”
“If they keep hitting me, my legs will break.”
To protect her legs, Cora finally reluctantly kept her promise, biting the raw meat and crawling out like a dog, howling.
After dealing with Cora, I prepared to leave.
When Chris saw I was leaving, he quickly reached out and grabbed my arm, “Honey, where are you going?”
“I’ve already punished Cora. I’ll never embarrass you for another woman again. Come home with me, please?”

I looked at Chris with a faint, mocking smile. “Mr. Stevens, are you out of your mind? Please have some
dignity. We’re done. Don’t call me that again.”
“Have you forgotten? We signed the divorce papers. Next time we meet, try not to… misaddress me.”
I shook off his hand, and at that moment, my childhood friend, Leopold Frost, arrived.
“Shannon! Was it because of him that you refused to marry me back then?”
“Your taste is awful. He’s not as handsome as I am, lacks presence, and most importantly, I’ve loved you
sincerely for ten years. And him? He couldn’t even stay faithful for three.”
Leopold’s arrival made everyone gasp.
They had never seen my true identity, but they had seen Leopold, one of the world’s wealthiest and most
recognizable figures.
Leopold was tall and handsome, and to him, Chris wasn’t even worth a second glance.
Especially when the two stood next to each other, Leopold completely overshadowed Chris.
With Leopold there, Chris finally felt genuinely threatened–and fear began to creep into his confidence.
Since we were already divorced, and given everything he had done to me, it was nearly impossible for him to
win me back.
“Hon… Shannon, who is he?”
Before I could answer, Leopold looked at him with disdain, “Who am I? Isn’t it obvious? I’m her fiancé. You’re
divorced now. Of course she’s free to marry someone else.”
I shook my head faintly, a resigned smile touching my lips. Leopold was always straightforward, never one
to hide his feelings.
“Let’s go! It’s been too long since I’ve been home to see my Mom and Dad.”
Chris chased after me. “Shannon, what about the Stevens family? What about me?”
I paused for a moment but didn’t turn back to look at him.
“Just like I said before, we’re divorced. What does it have to do with me?”
Chris finally choked up, tears immediately falling. “If I hadn’t humiliated you over Cora… if I had stopped them from hurting you earlier… would you have forgiven me?”
“If I weren’t Shannon, would you ever realize you were wrong? Would you punish Cora?”
Chris was left speechless, frozen without an answer.

I didn’t linger any longer. I walked out with Leopold.
In life, there’s no “ifs.” When you’re wrong, you’re wrong, and there’s no turning back.
