Chapter 6
The corner of my lips curved upward.
I turned toward the doorway.
A group of doctors in white coats stepped inside.
Dad and Mom looked confused as they recognized the one leading them.
“Dr. Hale?” Mom asked. “Why are you here?”
Dr. Hale smiled broadly.
“I came to congratulate you.”
He glanced at his chart.
“I drew blood for Celeste yesterday. The results came back this morning.”
He looked up.
“Celeste is pregnant.”
“Pregnant?!”
“What do you mean, pregnant?!”
Julian’s face changed instantly. Panic flickered in his eyes.
“Celeste,” he demanded, “when did this happen? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“… …”
Celeste stammered, unable to form a single complete sentence.
Dad and Mom looked just as stunned, frozen in place.
“Oh,” I said softly, covering my mouth as if surprised.
“So Celeste really is pregnant.”
I stepped closer, smiling gently at her.
“That’s huge news. Why didn’t you say anything earlier?”
Then I hesitated, tilting my head.

“But…”
My gaze drifted to the men still pinned to the floor.
“I’m just wondering-who’s the father?”
The men burst out laughing, exchanging knowing looks.
“Not me,” one of them said smugly. “I was careful.”
“Definitely not me either. We were always together.”
“Who said the kid has anything to do with us? Who knows how many men she-”
“Enough!” Celeste snapped, her face flushing red, then white.
“I have nothing to do with you!” she shouted. “And there’s no way I’m pregnant with your child!”
As she spoke, she instinctively grabbed Julian’s hand.
Seeing the plea in her eyes, Julian immediately squeezed her fingers reassuringly.
My eyes lit up.
“Celeste,” I said innocently, “why do you keep looking at Julian?”
I tilted my head.
“Unless… there’s a chance the baby is his?”
The room went completely silent.
An unsettling stillness settled over everyone.
I continued, as if unaware,
“I mean, you’re not related by blood,” I added thoughtfully, “Having a child together wouldn’t be illegal or
anything.”
I paused, glancing at the men on the floor, then sighed,
“I just don’t know whether the baby is actually his. After all…”
I let the sentence trail off.
Every face in the room changed.

Dad clenched his fists, veins bulging at his temples.
“Celeste!” he thundered. “Explain yourself. Whose child are you carrying?!”
Mom’s face turned ashen. She braced herself against the doorframe, barely standing.
“Julian,” she whispered desperately.
“Tell me. You and Celeste… you didn’t-

The color drained from both of their faces.
Neither of them could speak.
After a long, suffocating silence, Julian finally forced the words out.
“I’m sorry, Dad. Mom.”
He swallowed hard.
“I do have feelings for Celeste.”
“She’s a good person. And she’s not my biological sister.”
“There’s nothing wrong with us being together.”
“And now that she’s pregnant,” he said firmly, “I’ll take responsibility.”
“You absolute fool!”
Dad shook with rage and slapped Julian hard across the face.
Mom couldn’t take it. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed to the floor.
“Dad! Mom!” Julian cried out. “We’re in love!” he shouted desperately.
“Please-just let us be together!”
Celeste clutched his arm, tears streaming down her face.
“Thank you,” she sobbed. “I knew you’d never abandon me.”
I felt my stomach twist.
Still, I smiled and offered a gentle reminder.
“But Celeste,” I said calmly, “how can you be so sure the baby is Julian’s?”
