My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 108

Marina’s nails dug into her palm beneath the table. She hated when he used that tone, like she was a stranger asking for favors. But she smiled anyway, refusing to let him see her crack.

“I’m not pushing, David. I just want what’s normal.”

“Normal,” David repeated with a dry laugh. “Do you even know what that is?”

Marina’s face heated. “Don’t talk to me like that. What's wrong with you? Why you suddenly changed?"

The waiter arrived just then, breaking the tension. They ordered food, Marina choosing delicately, David picking quickly without caring.

As soon as the waiter left, Marina leaned forward again. Her voice dropped softer. “David, can’t you try? Just a little. I… I love you. We have been in love for years. Now everything is finally right. You signed the papers, Lily is out of the picture. Why are you still acting like I’m a stranger?”

David’s face didn’t move, but something in his eyes flickered. Suddenly he hated hearing Lily’s name in Marina’s mouth. He reached for his glass of water, drinking slowly, as if buying himself time.

“You got what you wanted,” he said finally, his voice quiet but sharp. “Why do you still look unsatisfied?”

Marina’s throat tightened. She forced a smile again, but her eyes burned. “Because you’re not looking at me the way you used.”

Silence dropped heavy on the table.

David’s jaw clenched. He set the glass down with a soft thud. “Enough.”

“David....”

“I said enough.” His voice was steel now, his eyes locked on hers. “Don’t bring her into this. Don’t compare yourself. It won’t end well.”

Marina’s hands shook under the table, but she bit her lip and nodded. She couldn’t let him see she was breaking. She couldn’t afford to lose him—not after coming this far.

The food arrived, steaming and beautiful, but neither of them touched it at first.

Finally, Marina picked up her fork and forced herself to smile again. “Fine. Let’s not talk about her. Let’s just… eat. Just dinner, like I asked.”

David didn’t reply. He cut into his steak quietly, his movements controlled, his face unreadable.

Marina watched him, her chest aching. She wanted to scream, to demand, to shake him until he looked at her the way she wanted. But instead, she smiled sweetly and took a bite of her salad, as if everything was normal.

Inside, she promised herself: I’ll make you mine completely. No matter how cold you act, no matter how much you still think of her, I’ll make sure you only see me.

David’s assistant.

Her heart raced. She glanced around quickly. The restaurant staff were busy on the far side. David hadn’t returned yet. Slowly, she reached across the table and picked up the phone. Her fingers shook as she slid it open and pressed “answer.”

“Hello?” she said softly.

There was silence for a beat. Then Roy’s cautious voice came. “Hello… Miss Laurent?” He sounded startled. He had expected David.

“Yes, it’s me,” Marina said smoothly, recovering quickly. “David is busy right now. What is it?”

“Oh… I was just calling to remind Mr. Hardison about tomorrow. He has an early morning meeting with the international clients. Everything is set for nine a.m.”

Marina’s lips curved into a small, sly smile. “Alright. I’ll tell him.”

“Thank you.”

She hung up quickly and exhaled. For a moment, she just held the phone in her hand, staring at the black screen. Her mind spun fast. Early morning meeting, important clients… another day he’ll use as an excuse to avoid me.
