For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.
Riyana’s chest felt tight. Her emotions were all over the place. She wanted to cry. She wanted to laugh. She wanted to hug him. She wanted to hide.
Instead, she did the only thing she knew how to do when emotions scared her.
“Fine,” she said, forcing her voice to sound casual. “I understand. You don’t have to be so serious.” She pushed gently against his chest, creating distance, not because she wanted to escape, but because her emotions were too close to spilling.
Then she turned away and looked out of the window.
Jabco froze.
That was not the reaction he expected.
Not even close.
He stared at her for a moment, unsure, then slowly leaned back into his seat. His shoulders dropped. He let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.
He shook his head slightly, helpless.
He had laid his heart bare. Every feeling he had buried for years. And she was acting like nothing had happened.
And she was pretending it didn’t shake her.
But he could see it.
The way her fingers tightened in her lap.
The way her breathing changed.
The way she avoided his eyes too carefully.
She was not indifferent.
She was overwhelmed.
And that knowledge filled him with a strange, quiet satisfaction.
Riyana was anything but unaffected.
Her heart was racing wildly. It felt like it was trying to escape her chest. Her lips wanted to curve into a smile so badly it almost hurt to hold it back.
She pressed her lips together, afraid that if she spoke, her voice would betray her.
She was melting inside.
His confession had shaken her completely. It came without warning, without preparation, and hit her right where she was weakest.
She felt warm. Safe and Wanted.
But she also felt scared.
So she stayed quiet.
He started the car.
Neither of them spoke for a while.
But the air between them had changed.
Something had shifted.
Something honest had finally been said.
And even if she didn’t admit it out loud, Riyana knew it.
His words had reached places inside her she had spent years trying to protect.
And they were not leaving anytime soon.
“Where are we going then?”
The question broke the silence inside the car. Jabco’s voice was calm, but the quiet between them had already stretched too long, heavy with unsaid things.
Riyana turned her head slowly and looked at him. For a second, she just watched his face, as if deciding how much she wanted to say.
“Blue Moon,” she answered quietly.
Jabco nodded once, waiting.
“Lily called me this morning,” Riyana added. “She invited us for dinner.”
She paused, then tilted her head slightly, her lips curving into something playful.
“She specifically told me to bring you too.”
The moment those words left her mouth, Jabco shot her a sharp look. His jaw tightened instantly.
Riyana couldn’t help it.
She burst out laughing.
It wasn’t loud, but it was full, carefree, almost teasing. She leaned back in her seat, enjoying his reaction a little too much.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
She knew he was already irritated. After everything he had just confessed, after laying his heart open like that, she was still pushing his buttons.
And honestly, she loved it.
Tonight, she decided, she was going to make him even more annoyed.
Jabco shook his head slowly and looked back at the road, gripping the steering wheel a bit tighter than before.
