After Marina wrapped up her shoot, they left the location together. The ride was quiet at first, only the sound of the car moving through the busy street.
David leaned back, pulling out his phone to check messages. His brows furrowed immediately—there were several missed calls from Roy. Then something struck him. His phone was on silent.
He stared at it, confused. Silent mode? He couldn’t even remember the last time he had ever done that. Why would he? He never put his phone on silent.
A sharp edge entered his voice as he dialed. “Roy.”
At the mention of Roy’s name, Marina’s body stiffened. Her hands curled tightly in her lap.
“Sir, where are you?” Roy’s voice burst through the speaker, panicked. “Everyone has been waiting! We had an important meeting this morning—Soul Group was in the conference room for two hours before they finally left in anger. After that, your Tokyo client and a domestic partner kept calling me nonstop. I thought something had happened to you!”
David’s jaw tightened. “Why didn’t you send me reminders? Why is my schedule empty?”
There was a pause. Then Roy’s voice cracked with disbelief. “Empty? Sir, I sent you everything last night. Your calendar was full. I even called to remind you. You didn't answered but…” His voice faltered as realization hit. “Wait… that wasn’t you last night..."
David’s eyes darkened. Slowly, he turned his head toward the woman sitting next to him.
“Marina.” His voice was low, controlled, but deadly cold.
Marina forced a shaky smile. Fear flashed across her face, her entire body trembling as she whispered, “David… I....”
“What did you do to my phone?” His words were calm, but his eyes burned with fire.
Marina’s lips trembled. She tried to hold her ground, even as panic spread in her chest. “I… I just thought… you’re always so busy, always running from meeting to meeting. I wanted you to rest. Just one day with me. Is that really too much to ask?”
David let out a bitter laugh, sharp and mocking. He leaned closer, gripping his phone tightly. “Too much to ask? Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Do you even understand the scale of the damage?”
“David, it’s just one day. You can reschedule…”
“Reschedule?” His voice thundered now, loud enough to shake her. “These aren’t casual dinner dates, Marina! These are international clients. They flew across continents to meet me. They’ve been waiting hours while you....” He cut himself off, his teeth gritted, fists curling in rage. “You just jeopardized partnerships I’ve been building for years.”
Marina shot up in her seat, desperate. She grabbed his arm, her nails digging in. “David, I did it for us! For us! You’re never spent time with me, you’re always busy, and I....”
she cried, her voice cracking.
He stared down at her, his voice like ice. “Fix it? Marina, the damage is already done. Do you even realize the Tokyo deal alone was worth billions? They won’t wait around for excuses. They’ll walk away, and they’ll take others with them.”
Marina’s body weakened. She had never seen him this furious.
“David…” her voice cracked. “I just wanted you to look at me.”
He brushed past her. “The only thing I see now is a liability.”
The words hit her like a blade.
As the door slammed behind him, Marina’s body gave out, and she collapsed onto the seat. Tears spilled down her cheeks, but anger soon mixed with them.
David held the taxi and went to office.
